Most of our furniture and decor is second hand. Our entertainment center is Tommy Bahama and in great condition, new it costs about $4500, we paid $450. Our four poster king bed frame is also Tommy Bahama and was $200, not sure what it would be new, but similar stuff is in the range of $2500. Those are probably our best deals as far a savings go. We also have several end tables and smaller pieces of furniture that we got from CL/thrift shops that we love. We also have a globe that opens up into a bar that is DH’s favorite thing.

JsDragonfly :  Yeah, another vote for this couldn’t be farther from my tastes what of I would put in my home….and I’m American.

Clearly a stereotype isn’t going to be a reflection of every single individual.

abouttodoit17 :  I think people are confused about what, specifically, you are referring to as being stereotypically American. Is it the black color, the gold accents, the shape, etc.? I’m not aware of a stereotype.

I also agree with PPs that these pieces are pretty far off from what I see in most American homes. I would say that the couch, rug and wall decor in the background of the OP’s photos are much more typical of what I tend to see (grays and light colors, muted designs, etc.), not the second hand pieces that were featured. Or is it the mixture of design styles that is American to you?

SithLady :  This conglomeration of faux-European estate pieces from different countries and periods is a style that is uniquely American. That doesn’t mean it is the singular American style, but you wouldn’t find a living room like OP’s anywhere but in the United States.

ETA: where I’m from, this style is called “Mafia furniture” – think Teresa on RHONJ.

SithLady :  It is unlikely to understand the stereotype considering you are actually american, it’s more of a stereotype from Europe of Americans.

spontoise :  Exactly!

spontoise :  Thank you. That’s the information I was looking for, since I’ve never heard of the stereotype (and the same with many PPs, obviously) and wanted to know more. Interesting. ETA: I looked up Teresa (never watched the show) and yes, I can see what you mean.

SithLady :  Okay then, someone had literally just explained it before I posted, I don’t see why it’s unhelpful for me to not want to repeat the same thing.

abouttodoit17 :   spontoise :

Please for the love of god, don’t you think we Americans are being humiliated enough with the mafia furniture president?

A majority of us have simply mediocre taste, nowhere near that mafia level poor taste you see on Tv. ETA Speaking for myself, of course.

sscott06 :  Your home is absolutely gorgeous – looks like a magazine. I don’t get it.

As for the question, I haven’t bought any furniture secondhand (yet) but I love getting exercise equipment! People spend top dollar for that stuff and two years later, having barely used it, they practically GIVE it away to get it out of the house. I have a Nordic Track elliptical, a Bowflex incline treadmill and a rowing machine. I probably spent about $400 on all three and the treadmill and the elliptical were in like new condition!

(I’m still fat though).
