I just purchased a secondhand gown at what i thought was a “steal” price of $35. I have been checking on what its going to cost to return the gown to wearable condition: Ten to 15 times this amount!! I have also learned I can go buy a brand new dress for less than $100. So my question to you is should i save myself the head and heart-ache of the restoration of the vintage gown and buy the new gown?

I’d say it depends on how much you love the second hand one. If it’s “your” dress, and you have the budget to do so, it’s worth the price to alter it. Do you have pictures of the two dresses?

I agree that it depends on how much you love the gown. And even if there are $100 dresses, the quality of the materials and design of your vintage dress may be much higher to the point that restorations are worth it.

Just sayin’ I’d get a 2nd opinion.

If you love it, it will be well worth the cost of restoration.
However if you aren’t passionate about it- drop the $ instead on a new dress 🙂

What exactly needs to be “restored?” Is it just yellowed from age or something? Or does a seamstress have to cut and sew it somehow to make it wearable? I need more information. And I definitely agree with one of the posters above; get more than one quote on the restoration.
