@Tsukaira:  We had that reading… but it’s not by St Augustine. I’m not sure where that idea came from (although I can see it’s all over the internet). Clues that it is not by a Catholic saint are a. the fact that it includes a line about “your mother and I” and the way the full quote reads (which made my in-laws blush when my mother read it at our wedding).

“Love is a temporary madness, it erupts like volcanoes and then subsides. And when it subsides, you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots have so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the promulgation of promises of eternal passion, it is not the desire to mate every second minute of the day, it is not lying awake at night imagining that he is kissing every cranny of your body. No, don’t blush, I am telling you some truths. That is just being “in love”, which any fool can do. Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident.”

I am THRILLED to have found this post. I knew about the ee cummings poem, but I wasn’t sure what else we would read. This has given me so many great ideas!

‘I carry your heart is beautiful’

are you bees having these readings in church? Just a question but do you think I could have the above reading in a church service or should it be bible readings? Please help, I hadn’t thought of this properly yet.

@Lexipalmer:  It would depend on the reading I would think. I would ask the minister of your church if he/ she is ok with a particular reading.

Both of these are excerpts from The Notebook (the book):

“Poets often describe love as an emotion that we can’t control, one that overwhelms logic and common sense. That’s what it was like for me. I didn’t plan on falling in love with you, and I doubt if you planned on falling in love with me. But once we met, it was clear that neither of us could control what was happening to us. We fell in love, despite our differences, and once we did, something rare and beautiful was created.”

“Our souls are connected. Maybe they always have been and will be. Maybe we’ve lived a thousand lives before this one and in each of them we’ve found each other. When I look at you, I see your beauty and grace and know they have grown stronger with every life you have lived. And I know I have spent every life before this one searching for you. Not someone like you, but you, for your soul and mine must always come together.”

I’m not usually sentimental, but I teared up something awful reading through this thread. Bookmarking for later.
