MissAlishaFord:  My friends did a self-serve beer and wine bar for a 100-person outdoor wedding and it worked out fine. Just make sure that everything is spread out so more than one person can be accessing drinks at a time. My friends had the kegerator to one side and the wine in a canoe about 5 feet away so people weren’t crowded around each other trying to grab what they wanted.

MissAlishaFord:  As long as the drinks are in a dispenser and as long as cups or glasses are available, your guests should be able to figure out what to do, so don’t worry about it. Maybe put up a sign that hints to your guests that they should help themselves to any of the drinks available.

Have more glasses than you think you will need. Otherwise should be easy as long as it’s constantly restocked and kept up.

oh! another thing my friends did was to make glasses the wedding favor. everyone had one to use for the night and then take home as a keepsake. I’ve been to two weddings that did this (they used very subtle etching so it’s obviously from their wedding, but not tacky) and loved it both times – and still use the glasses all the time!

MissAlishaFord:  I think that’s a cool idea and I’d be pumped to go to a wedding with margs and sangria. I honestly would not leave out self serve hard liquor though. That to me is just a recipe for some out of control sloppiness. Could you maybe have the caterer just serve that if people request shots? If you are going to put hard alcohol out for anyone, you will want to provide mixers like seltzer and juice.

Don’t leave the tequila (or any hard alcohol) out, have that served or prepoured at the very least. People don’t instinctively know how much is a shot so they tend to over serve themselves and the liquor will go faster than you think. Then there are the people who think a drink with half alcohol and half mix is the only way to drink, Or the people who think they have to do shots all night long, and then there is the waste factor when people loose track of drinks as its easier to think you’ll just go make yourself another one over the psychology of keeping your drink close because the person serving knows you just got one.
