Self-serve could cause several issues.  Underage drinking, overdrinking, people taking more than they need (in case they’re worried it will ‘run out’).  I considered this early on when we planned our wedding (it was at a house), but ultimately decided against it, especially since we were having liquor.

I’m surprised any venue would allow you to have non-certified people serving alcohol, the legality is questionable and the liability on them is huge.  I know here that anywhere except a private residence requires servers of a certain age with a certification.  Also, everywhere except a residence requires a permit or licence to serve alcohol.  Just look into it to be safe!

That said, we did have a bottle of red and a bottle of white wine on each of our tables, which we felt worked well!  I also asked friends of mine to act as bartenders, which was cheap and allowed some new friends of mine from work attend my wedding (as I had met them long after invites and numbers were decided), so they were happy.  Maybe you could do something like that?
