devec :  No personal experience, but I would for sure check NJ laws just to be sure just in case there are residency restrictions. I would also find out which state you must file your completed marriage certificate in as well. I would imagine, maybe incorrectly, that a marriage certificate would probably need to be filed in the state which it was held.

devec :  yep, my husband and I did this in Colorado (we live in Wyoming).  It’s just like any other kind of marriage license.  You can get married in any state and have it count in all the rest of the states, like you’d do in any kind of destination wedding.  Like PP said though, be sure and follow all the rules for the PA marriage licensing… any waiting periods, deadlines for filing it, etc.  Colorado has no waiting period after getting the license and I think it had to be filed within 30 days (mail-in ok).

Congrats and enjoy!

Generally speaking, marriages are legal if they were legal in the jurisdiction in which they took place.

A self uniting marriage is legalin PA, so it is recognized in NJ. You file your wedding license in PA. You apply for a certificate of marriage. You don’t need to do anything in NJ. You can change your name or not.Marriages don’t need to be registered anywhere, other than where they took place.

Quaker weddings, also known as self-uniting weddings, are a special type of ceremony where no officiant is needed to wed two parties. To hold a Quaker wedding in Pennsylvania, first you need  you, your partner and two witnesses. You’ll need to apply for a marriage license (there’s a $90 marriage license fee) as well as a Quaker/self-uniting license or certificate (additional $100 fee) through the City of Philadelphia Office of Wills . Then you need a self-uniting certificate declaring your intention to be married. The Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends offers the traditional language here, but couples may modify and customize the certificate. (In fact, Etsy is full of Quaker wedding certificate vendors.) Once you get the license and all parties sign the certificate in a ceremony of your choosing, you’re married.

We also did this in Colorado (last July) and at that time it was required that we be married in the state of Colorado. There was no way to prove where we we said our vows, but that was what the paperwork said. We got the paperwork in Denver, went out to a hot springs over the weekend, and then went back on Monday to turn in the paperwork. For us the cost was only $30.

I live right outside of Philly and my neighbors, a long term couple, did this last summer. For a ceremony, they simply found a pretty spot in some nearby woods, gathered their adult children from previous marriages and shared their sentiments. The groom was still a Jersey resident on paper and it doesn’t effect a thing 🙂

devec :  Since you are getting married in PA, you WILL need to get your Self-Uniting License in PA.  It doesn’t matter that you live in another state.

julies1949 :  Self-uniting licenses are much cheaper outside of Philly.  Monroe and Carbon County are approximately 1/2 the price.
