So I had a really hard finding an engagement ring that I liked. Everything was just a little bit off. So my fiance and I decided to have my ring custom made. I wrote out a long detailed explanation to send to the custom jeweler, but my fiance had it made without me knowing. It was wonderful of him to surprise me, but unfortunately the ring didn’t turn out quite how I had wanted. I was torn between keeping the original ring that he proposed to me with, and having a ring that I really loved. We’ve finally decided to pursue a new ring. So I need some advice! What do I do with my old ring? I want to put the value toward the new ring, but I think I might have a really hard time trying to sell it (ebay? pawn shop? craigslist?) especially since it was custom made. I was hoping maybe a jeweler would buy it from me to “use for parts” – like take the diamonds out, melt the gold, etc. but I have no idea if 1. they would be willing, 2. how discounted they would require it, 3. how much they would cut out to cover their labor in taking it apart.
Has anyone had this experience? Any advice? Any jewelers out there who can make suggestions? Thank you!!
For reference (in case any one is interested!), here is a picture of my ring. It’s a princess cut center stone, 1.34 cts, I color, VS2 clarity, with a halo and split shank consisting of 40 smaller diamonds.
