justanormalgal :  One third of all campaigns on GoFundMe.com are for medical expenses. Some cancer patients get help from the government. Some get help from friends and family and gofundme’s. And some go bankrupt and get sued by the hospitals. Do you seriously think no one ends up with medical bills they can’t afford?

Here’s a story this week about a woman who DIED because she couldn’t afford her insulin https://myglu.org/articles/jada-louis-died-because-she-had-to-choose-between-paying-for-rent-or-insulin

This dude died because he couldn’t afford insulin https://www.cbsnews.com/news/mother-fights-for-lower-insulin-prices-after-sons-tragic-death/

Another dude died because he couldn’t afford insulin http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/07/another-person-has-died-from-rationing-insulin.html

Yes, the drug companies are out of control with their pricing, that doesn’t get us as a nation off the hook. We HAVE to do better than this. We simply have to. And if that means your taxes go up a little bit, too bad, so sad, because you can’t put a price on being a decent fucking human being that doesn’t let their neighbors die for lack of medical care.

On the topic of healthcare, the US spends the most per capita compared to many other countries (including significantly more than countries with a nationalised health system such as the UK). Higher spending didn’t translate to better outcomes, nor is healthcare used more frequently compared to other countries. This would suggest that the US could certainly ‘afford’ nationalised healthcare and it would likely actually save money.

beeyouteefal :  People who do not own cars do not call and get insurance.  People who do not own homes do not have homeowners insurance.  That is thier choice to not have these items and therefore they are not forced to purchase what they do not choose to have.  If you do not want health insurance it should be your choice to have it or not.  If you choose to have it, it should be your choice as to what coverage type you want.  You should not be forced into one type.  I do not know how much more I can water this down.  I know perfectly how universal healthcare works.

hispanicimpressions :  we can afford a freaking wall apparently. If we can blow billions on a wall, why can’t we blow billions to fix the health care system instead. Or on any other number of things that can directly improve our lives

Sansa85 :  I agree the cost of healthcare does need to be addressed, however people also need to learn self accountability again.

BookishBee :  That would be the beauty of a democracy if our elected officials would grow up and do that but they choose to fight and bicker along party lines.  Like I said earlier-there are idiots in Government on both sides and they need to start thinking of the American people.

justanormalgal :  what does self accountability have to do with healthcare costs? People go broke even WITH insurance because the costs are so high

zzar45 :  I am not a Conservative.  I am a Libertarian.  I am a black woman from the hood who married the evil white man and educated myself.  Then educated my family and was able to help them see the lies of the Democratic party has dished out to Black America.  People need to take responsibility for themselves and have the choice to choose their path without the Government dictating to them where to go.

justanormalgal :  ” I agree the cost of healthcare does need to be addressed, however people also need to learn self accountability again.”

This rhetoric is not only factually incorrect, it’s inflamatory and unhelpful. While there are, no doubt, some people who cause their own illnesses through poor lifestyle choices, many people get sick or injured through no fault of their own.  And when others try to be more accountable for the environmental factors that increase illness, such as air pollution, chemical contamination, or dirty/contaminated water, they’re blocked at every turn. The recent wave of deregulation means there’s so much toxic crap going into our air, soil, water and food supply, all in the name of corporate profits.  You can eat well, exercise and take great care of yourself and still end up with a shitty disease because the water in your taps is toxic.

So tell me again how people need to be more accountable?

We enact laws and systems to protect people from themselves all the time. We have helmet laws and seatbelt laws and laws about child safety, worker protections, workplace safety, consumer product safety and more. People are often short-sighted and make some foolish choices; other times people just cannot be expected to research all their options. That doesn’t mean they deserve to die if they are in an accident or fall ill unexpectedly.

How can saying, “Oh, you made a foolish choice and didn’t buy insurance, so now you deserve to be denied treatment and die” even be an option?

BookishBee :  That really isn’t a study that is common sense that if you go to the doctor annually and take care of yourself properly then you will live longer.  If you do not take care of yourself and don’t go to the doctor for a annual check up then of course your not going to live as long.
