I sent Save-The-Date Cards only to my out of town guests and immediate family members. We haven’t had an issue.

I only sent out my STD to out of towners, family and family friends.  I am a young bride, so we decided not to send them out to friends, because what would they do with them?  Also, most of our friends had never heard of save the dates, so it was no big deal!

U can.

Though I have gotten so many people(who live intown) asking me over and over again when the wedding was, that I decided to get save the dates for each household.

And I got magnet ones from magnetstreet.com , so people can put it on their fridge and not lose it.

You can do whatever you want.  I sent our stds only to people that I really wanted there. Those courtesey out of towners and obligation invites got 6 weeks notice with the invites. And friends that we were on the fence with like coworkers that your relationship might change also didn’t get them. Delayed making that decision until we had a better idea of costs and space.

I’d suggest doing it by word of mouth but only because many people think an STD is an invite. If people start gossiping it may lead on to “so-and-so didn’t get invited”. We (us bees) all know it’s an STD but I’d hate for your local guests to feel B-listed.
