and I have gotten just over 1031 completes so far!! Another 188 of these have either started the survey and not finished yet or they have only completed part of the survey and have since then dropped out. I cannot describe how pleased I feel with my results thus far and its only the first day!! My survey is planned to run for another 26 days so I’m hoping that this number will continue to go up.
Forgot to mention, I am a graduate student working on my thesis. I’m still trying to shoot for a May graduation (getting married in June) so I’m hoping the analysis of the surveys goes just as well.
I apologize if you think that I’m boasting too much here…I seriously have had an awful graduate experience so today has actually been one of only a few days for the past two years in which I can say I am having a good day! It feels good to know things have gone right! 🙂

Ahh man…I thought this was a pretty impressive response rate. I must be wrong. Sorry ladies!

Why do you think that’s not impressive anymore? It sounds pretty impressive to me! Undergrads are pretty difficult to get a hold of, let alone have any follow through. My apologies to any undergrads who read this, please don’t take it personally!

@LaurenK0105: No offense taken, I completely agree. I’m trying to get members of an organization I run to simply express an opinion about the future of the organization. It’s like pulling teeth.
@blondie_6547: I think that’s a great response! I know I answer maybe 1/2 the surveys that go to my email account.

That’s excellent! How many responses are you hoping to get overall, and how many would be enough to do what you need? For a thesis, you’re already off to a great start. Good luck with analysis!

I’m in the same boat! We’re analyzing professional development efforts at a local school district, and have sent out a survey to the entire faculty at all 5 high schools in the district. We have to have the first part of our report done this Tuesday (front end analysis) and the last 30 pages of the report done by Ma7th. That’s exactly 1 week before my wedding. Yeah… I’ll totally be sane by then!
what survey instrument did you use? We used SurveyMonkey.

This is a great response rate! I know this, because I do this for a living. Can you share your secret? What did your subject line and invitation say?
You will see that you get the biggest bump within the first 24 hours, after that it trickles down. Do you have any way of sending a reminder to non-responders after a few days? This way you will likely see another, smaller bump.

Thanks for the support everyone. I just checked again and now I have 1365 completed surveys with another 198 partial completed surveys (either dropped out, still completing the survey, or is coming back to complete the survey.
@Knubbsy-Wubbsy: Thats still really nice of you to respond to 1/2 of the surveys. Some surveys are more difficult to answer compared to others especially if your not interested.
@LaurenK0105: Some people just delete the survey…if only the knew about the blood sweat and tears that go into constructing the survey. Haha…but I totally get that students are over surveyed so I don’t blame them.
@Amaryllis: Thanks! I hope the analysis goes well. I am hoping to get around 1900 completed surveys. With this I believe I should be able to infer my responses from our sample to the population.
@bunnyfoofoo: Wow that’s crazy you are doing a survey as well. I hope your analysis goes well too! It can be such a daunting process so I hope you are able to get the last bit of the analysis done smoothly so that you can focus on you wedding that last week. Good luck! Ohh…and we are using my campus’s online survey program its called axio. It was free for me to use!
@AprilJo2011: I’m not really quite sure what the secret to the survey is. I’m guessing that my incentive has encouraged some to participate. I will be having a prize drawing for an iPad. Therefore, I included this in the email subject as well as just saying that it’s a university research study. I will be able to send reminder emails. I have them being sent once a week for a total of three times (I might reduce this number however). FYI that’s awesome you do survey design for a living! I’m not sure that I could continue to do survey’s after I am done with my thesis. They are so time consuming and so meticulous! But I must say when you get results, the feeling is pretty amazing. I’m sure you can agree 😉

Wow! That’s great news. I hope you thesis goes well! I remember working on mine and though it was really challenging it’s well worth the hassle. Keep up the good work!

having done a marketing resaearch class, i’m impressed with your results! that’s a decent response rate and i do hope more people reply too. i always complete surveys though now i’m kind of a jerk because i can’t help but silently critique the construction of any given survey. lol.
