Sephora has a much larger selection.  Ulta is much less aggravating on a Saturday or Sunday.  I recommend calling and making an appointment at Sephora–a weeknight or weekday is a far better time.  I think they charge $50, which you can apply towards a purchase.

I went to Sephora on a Saturday with my mom – it was packed, but we asked for a consultant and got one within 15 minutes.  I loved getting to find different brands of make-up – Sephora for eyes, Bare Escentuals for skin, etc.  My consultant was also great, explained everything she was doing, and really took my wishes into account.  There wasn’t even talk of a $50 fee, because she knew I was buying make-up, and sadly spent waaaaay more than $50.  I got a couple kits though (i.e. a smoky eye kit) with directions and everything that were really helpful.

Ulta because their stuff is usually less expensive.

I usually don’t shop at either unless I’m treating myself… I’m totally okay with drugstore make up, but if I were to choose one to go to to buy something nice, I’d choose Sephora

I was a huge fan of Sephora, until we got an Ulta. I had never heard of this before and now I am so PRO Ulta. I have had an amazing experience every time I have gone in there and have always had great and very helpful consultants.

LOL Ive worked at both, so I have no help for you! I love both for different reasons. When I worked at Sephora, we werent allowed to charge for makeovers, but I can say that we were professionally trained in the field (color, kincare, fragrance). We didnt have any training at Ulta. But I loved working for both! Sephora has a larger selection of Prestige cosmetics if youre looking for more of a variety.

I love Sephora!  Everyone there is always so nice and they have a GREAT rewards program!

The only brand that is missing from there is Mac.  I love Mac concealer and think they do a great job with the variety of colors they have to match your skin.

@Ambellina13:  I have to agree… MAC is my favorite makeup brand, but I also love shopping at Sephora!  If they carried MAC it would be perfect!!  Ulta is okay, but I rarely find anything that I need there.

@MsFoxxy:  The Mac people sold me when I walked into their shop at macy’s and could give me an accurate concealer color just by looking at me.  They also taught me that you need the warm color under your eyes, and the cool color on the rest of your face.  I have never had better matching concealer!!

@peaches1038: As far as blush goes, I highly recommend Nars’ Orgasm blush.  The shade is a perfect flush of pink, and a lot of makeup artists use it.  i also really like benefit’s high beam (it gives a nice dewy glow to the face) and a bent eyeliner brush.  I was at Sephora right after I got engaged, and the sales associate helping me check out mentioned something about a makeup lesson where you pay a few hundred dollars, and they teach you by making-up half your face, and then you have to do the other half.  included in the price is a gift certificate for sephora to buy the makeup you need. (maybe it was this beauty advisor thing?? http://www.sephora.com/go/beautystudio/#specialoccasion )

Sephora hands down.  Ulta is almost a glorified drugstore.  They have a lot of the same things you can buy at Target or CVS.  I also think the girls at Sephora are much more helpful.

The only thing I prefer Ulta for is nail polish, Sephora has a lot more high end brands

Sephora. I find they have a bit more sophisticated collection, whereas Ulta is like a really fun drugstore. I always feel fancy shopping at Sephora, and have probably given them more paychecks than I care to admit.
