I don’t know about resorts, but maybe what can help you decide is what excursions they offer from the resort. These places are all very different and the activities there might help you decide. I was in both Costa Rica and St. Lucia while on a cruises and there are a lot of things to do, but if you only plan to stay at the resort, then you wouldn’t need to worry about that. In Costa Rica they have banana plantations, coffee, rainforests and I hear the Pacific side is very nice. I have heard that St. Lucia is extremely lush and beautiful, it just wasn’t the day I was there. It was very rainy and cloudy on the day we were there in October. There are volcanoes on St. Lucia and they also have the Pitons(mountains.)  I have heard people really like Aruba, but I don’t know much about that. Hope that helps.

@BDH-ERP:  It really depends on what you’re looking to do & what your travel style is.  Costa Rica is a great country if you’re looking to do a lot of traveling around & see volcanoes, wildlife rainforests, beaches, etc.  It’s a great eco-tourism destination.  St. Lucia, w/its mountains is a wonderful place to go & hike or mountain bike the lush terrain.  Aruba is a beautiful island, but it is unlike the more tropical destinations of Costa Rica & St. Lucia.  Aruba is very flat & desert-like.  The beaches there are phenomenal & it’s the kind of place where you can easily venture away from your hotel & take in the local culinary scene or do some high-end shopping in the capitol city of Orjanestad.  It is one of the cleanest & safest places I’ve ever been to.  It’s great for water activities (e.g., snorkeling, scuba diving, & fishing), & you can rent ATVs & explore the island since it’s only about 18 miles wide.  IMO, Aruba is a great destination if you’re wanting more laid-back activities & beach time; whereas, Costa Rica & St. Lucia would be better suited if you’re more inclined to do a lot of different things on an almost daily basis.

My parents just got back from St. Lucia and said that the poverty there is just appalling and made it kind of hard to enjoy themselves, even though their resort was amazing. I’ve heard the same from a few people about Aruba. I’ve never heard a bad word about Costa Rica… so I’d go there. 🙂

@CorgiTales: that’s most of the places in the Caribbean and Costa Rica is no different.

@CorgiTales:  I’m surprised that you’ve heard that about poverty in Aruba.  Unlike most other Caribbean islands, it’s the one with the least amount poverty.  The Aruban people are highly educated and unemployment rates are practically near 0%.  Because it’s such a small island, everyone knows everyone else, so it’s almost like there’s a stigma about not making your own way & relying on assistance.  The Arubans are a very proud people.  Even some of the “poorest” houses that we’ve seen there are 10 times better than some of the areas around our own city.

I stayed in Aruba for a week about 5yrs ago.. it was great!  Like a previous poster stated, it’s more suited for laid-back activities and beach time.  We did do the ATV tour and it was so much fun!

If you’re wanting to do a lot, you should probably stick with Costa Rica or St. Lucia.  I haven’t been to Costa Rica, but I have been to St. Lucia… it was sooo beautiful.

Here is my review of a Sandals in St. Lucia.  As PPs noted, most Caribbean islands are very poor.  One of the reasons we didn’t go to Jamaica (considerably less expensive) was that we didn’t want to feel unsafe outside the resort.  Turns out we don’t care about leaving the resort so we could have saved ourselves some $$$…

I was debating this as well (wedding is also in September). And I have narrowed it down to Aruba and Costa Rica. The reason for these two us that September is high for hurricane season, and these two places are way out of the hurricane belt. So remeber… St.Lucia is within the hurricane belt so although it may be an awesome island, if you get stuck there during a hurricane (or can’t go because of a hurricane) that would be awful.

My choice is Aruba. When I think of a honeymoon I think of white sand beaches and aqua blue water, and that is what Aruba is like. Sooo pumped!!

@CorgiTales: WOW I found St. Lucia to be the complete opposite of what your parents saw.  My Darling Husband and I felt that the poverty in St. Lucia was no where near as bad as other popular vacation destinations (we’ve been to Nassau-Bahamas, St. Thomas, Montego Bay- Jamaica, Punta cana- DR, Cancun-Mexico).  We were pleased with how ‘developed’ St. Lucia is compared to other places we have visited.  Do your parents travel much?
