Well….you can’t exactly book a venue unless you know what date you want..

Before I had the venue booked I told people “we are looking at May 26th”.  After I handed the check over I felt like I could say for sure that was the day.

Alternatively, if you have a specific venue in mind that is a popular one, you might want to have several dates in mind, since that will increase your chances of being able to book it.  I just told people we were thinking sometime in July until we actually booked the venue.

@rachey: this is true as well!  Our venue is very very popular (books 2+ years out) and to get a date, (we changed dates 2-3 times) we kept asking when the free dates were and then picked “our” date from those!

Yes, you need to have a general idea of the date you’d like to book.  🙂  good luck and happy planning!

We picked our date ourselves and told people tentatively. Once we booked our reception hall, it was solidified.

I usually just tell people the month – even now that we have an exact date. People just want to be nice and show an interest so they ask if you’ve set a date. Unfortunately – they don’t realize that newly engaged couples get interrogated like crazy and its stressful!

It depends on your priority…..date or venue!  We knew which venue we wanted….and gave a couple of dates to them…..and picked the one they had available! Not a stupid question…..wedding planning is overwelming!

Not a stupid question at all. I knew what date I wanted and since I didn’t have any specific venue in mind I could say the date, just not the venue for a couple months.
