My mom recently got a new wedding ring for her 25th anniversary, and her old ring was a cluster of maybe 10-15 diamonds in a marquise shape set in a wide yellow gold band. Her and I have completely different styles, I prefer a round center diamond with small pave set diamonds in a white gold band.
My question is… Would it be more cost effective to use the diamonds from her old ring to create the pave sidestones for my ring? They are little, so the right size for the style of ring I would want, I would just need a jewler to set them along with a bigger center stone. Or, sentimental value aside, would it be better to buy a ring that is already set with diamonds at a jewelry store?

I think it depends on the jewelry store. I know the little local shop next to where we live will set any stone for $20 each. But they get cha when you order the ring for the stones to be set in. I asked about a 5 stone setting once and they told me it would be $1000 total and I thought that sounded to high because I would have been useing my own stones.

Try and price out both options with a local jeweler then make your mind up from there…I would personally use the stones you currently have because they have meaning behind them. Good luck

I don’t think it will be cost effective because the diamonds themselves are inexpensive, the cost behind something like that is in the individual setting of each. It may come out slightly cheaper, but not much. The sentimentality is through the roof though 🙂

@BabyBlueEyes: I would ask a local jeweler to see how much it would cost to get the stones re-set in something that is more your style. It might be cheaper to get a whole new ring. Have you thought about having a pendant made with those stones to wear on your wedding day?

From what I learned, there’s a “resetting fee” for almost any jeweler. For one stone it’s MUCH cheaper to use a stone you have, however for serveral it could be cost prohibitive. But to get a definite answer I’d talk to several jewelers near you. Their prices can vary quite a bit. We got quotes for recasting a ring with a diamond (including resetting the diamond and making the mold) and got everything from $225 to $900, most were in the $250-$300 range… but as I said that was just for recasting the gold (simple but custom) and resetting one stone.
