I know many of you are super knowedgeable and I would love some help. I have an 8mm stone in a plaint, white gold setting. I’d like to set the stone in something a little more sparkly…or maybe even something with ruby sidestones (SO’s wedding band will be red and black). I went to an independent jeweler yesterday to get price quotes and for something with .15 of diamonds, I’m looking at $1,300. I thought that was a little expensive.
So I guess I have two questions…
Is $1,300 a fair price for 14k white gold and .15 of G, SI1 sidestones?
Is there anywhere I might be able to find a large selection of settings slightly less expensive other than ebay?

Hi lovely. Depending on your region it may be 1300 for everything. Have you considered going to a family owned or small jewelry shop that’s local to You? Sometimes if you have it made custom it can be less expensive. You can also see the CAD images before you ok the ring. And you can get exactly what you want because you designed it! How special to have a one of a kind piece! Look on yelp and Instagram for local shops that have similar rings to what you like. Then email and talk to them! Get quotes.
I would be leary of anyone wanting all the money up front before the final product is on your finger. A deposit may be required.

Hmm I agree. Depending on your region it might be a good price. However in mine I would think too much for gold. I would expect to be paying closer to 900 to 1000 for gold with only a few stones. We had my centre stone already so we only paid 1900 for a platinum setting with probably 3/4ths of a carat or so in diamonds and alot of teeny prongs. They really gave us an awesome deal and because of it I pretty much only go to that jeweller when I want something done because it will be done well and for a decent price. If I were you I would hold onto that quote and check around to see if anyone can do better. Don’t be afraid to test their knowledge either to make sure their prices are fair and not just low because they do crap work. I reccomend checking out reviews of wherever you get a quote too. Hopefully you can find a beautiful ring soon!

The $1,300 price was from a local family jeweler. I told them that I was just browsing and considering options, so they did not ask me for a deposit or go into depth on pricing.
I will say that they told me that they would have to special order in/cast a new setting to fit my stone, which I would guess is part of the price. I just thought it would be a little less expensive due to the low diamond weight and lower color/clarity grade.
Thank you for all of the advice. I will definitely source around a little more!

You try David Klass he does a lot of custom work for cheaper and it looks amazing.

That’s probably 3-4x what I’d pay, I have my project rings custom made and $1,300 just for a .15ct semi mount seems very high – but like the others that might be the norm for where you live. I’d just shop around if you’d like to pay less, or contact an Etsy jeweler to have them make it for you (that’s how I save $$)

Hi, I stumblled upon this thread and I was wondering if you could recommend some etsy sellers that do quality custom work? I’m looking to have a custom wedding band made and I’m a little overwhelmed with how many custom jewelers there are out there. Have you had any success with any in particular?
