Grew up watching X-Men… But I have friends from Portugal with the name Xavier and they most definitely pronounce it ‘Z-ah-vee-eh’

weird old thread but since we had this exact same conversation amongst friends recently I thought I’d chip in.

If you want to be accurate in Spanish phonetics, ‘X’ is pronounced ‘KS’. So if we are basing the name off St Francis Xavier, it should be ‘Ksay-vee-er’.

Look at Alexander for instance,   you don’t pronounce it Al-e-zan-der, but Al-eks-an-der, given how it has an ‘E’ in front of the ‘X’. People that say ‘Zavier’ are just making it easy for themselves, lol.

I had always been taught that the proper pronounciation is “Zay-vier” and that while “Ex-zay-Vier” is common colloquially, it’s only because a lot of people don’t know how to pronounce it correctly, and see the X, so say “ex”…

Ex -ay-vier is  the pronunication  used by people who don’t know the correct pronunciation and are going by phonetics.

it is  Zay-vier . Or Hah-vee-ay (ish) if Hispanic.

I like eck-ZAY-vee-er better, but I’ll go with the flow depending on the country. Seeing as I’m swedish and Xavier isn’t used as a name herr. If it was, it would probably be pronounced differently altogether 😛
