    I’m Canadian and have definitely only ever heard X-ay-vee-er.  If you don’t want people to say the X, then don’t put an X at the front, haha!

    I’ve heard both, but it sounds most natural to me as your first way.

    ETA: Philly area

    I’m from Canada and I would pronounce it eck-zay-vee-er.  I attended St. Francis Xavier Univeristy (St. F.X.), and usually the prononciation I’ve heard is the way that I mentioned above.

    That being said, I’ve heard eck-zavv-ee-er more often than zay-vee-her.  I was surprised to not see that as an option, actually!

    @AmeliaBedelia:  This is very true.

    Why is Xander = zander and Xavier = eck-zavier?

    doesn’t make sense.

    hahaha! Darling Husband and i have this debate, too! Xavier is his confirmation name and loves it. So he always pronounces it “Ex-zav-er” and i just say the Z pronunciation. I think I’m right! 😉

    I worked with someone named Xavier and he pronounced it “eck-zay-vee-er.”  I’m from the US.

    The X is “silent” and like a Z. The same way the nickname Xander for Alexander is “egg-zander.” It’s just “Zander.”

    I mean fuck, it’s not an egg-zylophone. It’s just a zyolphone. (xylophone)

    It’s not an egg-zerox. It’s just zerox! (xerox)

    I have known people with that name that pronounce it both ways, and I live in Ohio. So I’d say— I’ll pronounce however the name holder tells me too!

    I think Zay-vee-er does sound better, but if I was a teacher calling roll, I’m naturally going to say “eck-zay-vee-er.”
