There is iron-on basting tape that you can buy.  You cut a small piece and iron it on to one thing, peel off the backing and then iron it to the 2nd thing.  I would do that to stick everything together loosely, then reinforce it with simple stitches in key areas… not stitching all the way around.  Remember to match your thread to the top fabric, and don’t worry if the back is messy!

Nope, won’t show through, it’s transparent when it heats.  It’s really easy to use.  Just go to a fabric store and they can show you where it is.  Play around with it with some scrap fabric first, and make sure you cover whatever you’re ironing with a thin fabric like a pillowcase so you don’t burn it.

I’m not sure what you mean by a “sorta-ax-type thing”. The product you are looking for is called fusible web. It works the same way as the pp described.
