I personally had a huge surge in my sex drive when I went off the pill in January. I just found out I’m pregnant (we were trying) and it’s gone down again (hoping it goes back up soon!). I guess she just has to be extra careful and use other BC methods unless she wants to get pregnant!

princesslettuce14:  I was on the Nuvaring for 2 years before taking it out once I got married. My sex drive definitely went up once I stopped using it. I hadn’t realized how much it had gone down when I was on it until I stopped.

Bazinga:  Your sex drive will go up, I promise. I am 17 weeks pregnant and during my first trimester I didn’t have much of a sex drive because I felt so sick and was so tired, all I wanted to do when I went to bed was sleep. Once I got into my second trimester, around 14-15 weeks, I started feeling better and have noticed it’s gone up.

I think it depends on why you go off your BC. If you’re trying to get pregnant, that’s exciting and your sex drive goes up. If you go off BC but aren’t trying to get pregnant (or close to that) then I think it has less of an effect. But so long as they use other BC methods, it likely won’t hurt her sex drive, so I think it’s worth a shot!

I went off the pill for a few months just to give my body a break after being on it for over 10 years. And yes, SO certaintly noticed a difference (I never considered the pill it until after I read up afterwards) I went from a couple times a week to a why not seconds or thirds everyday?! He couldn’t keep up!  We were using condoms for BC. Back on the pill and back to a few times a week only thanks. I’m a little sad cause I think it also helps getting to the O so much easier off the pill. Plus the other thing she might want to consider, a lot of women can experience hair loss from coming off the pill similar hormonal issue after pregnant women have a baby.

BulldogBride:  Thank you for that glimmer of hope! I hate not wanting to get it on but I’m so tired!

I can’t say anything about the increase after going off the pill, but I can say that I’ve experienced a decrease in my sex drive thanks to nuvaring.  I’m hoping that when I quit taking it, I’ll have an increase (or return to normal!)

The other birth controls I have been on haven’t affected me like this, but I otherwise love the ring, so am sticking with it for now.

I have no doubt at all that the pill affected my sex drive. I NEVER wanted it at all. About a month after I got off the pill, I wanted it more for sure.

I never went back on. I figured there was no point in taking a pill that prevents pregnancy when I wasn’t even having sex. The pill made me crazy and really affected my relationship.

Having said that, not all pills are the same so maybe your sister could try a different one.

Pills that contain estrogen tend to have a LOT more side effects. I was on…uh, Orthocept? for a year. I started having weeklong breakthrough bleeding every month before my actual period, my sex drive died, I felt more depressed, and it gave me high blood pressure. Switched to the mini pill (Micronor in my case), which doesn’t have estrogen — it’s slightly less effective (98% compared to the common pill’s 99%…OH NO!).

I loved that pill. Never had a side effect, sex drive was normal. Like everyone else is saying, on Orthocept, I couldn’t have sex for half the month anyway. That, and even when I wasn’t bleeding, I had little interest in it. Maybe that’s the real power of the pill — you’re never in a situation to actually get pregnant! 😀

princesslettuce14:  I went off the pill before I got my IUD put in (copper Paraguard so still no hormones) and I noticed quite the difference in my sex drive, within like a week. But I did notice different levels of my sex drive with different pills… When I was on the Seasonique my drive was like zip, zero, zilch… But when I went on some other one it went up a bit, but still not like it was without pills peroid… If she is still wanting to prevent pregnancies maybe you could recommend the IUD to her? They have a hormonal one & a non-hormonal copper one, the copper one is good for up to 10 years too!

I’ve noticed zero change in drive after going off the pill. I would suggest she try a different BC pill if that one isn’t working for her, rather than going completely off.

  • Wedding: civil war era church at the state park where we had our first date!

My drive sky rocketed after going off the pill. I seriously wasn’t even interested in much touching at all! This was a few years ago and since I’ve become a Christian and fi was when we met, we decided to wait to have sex, so I had a copper iud placed bc I was scared that lack of sex drive was going to be damaging to my marriage… now I can’t wait til our wedding night!
