Where I’m from (Toronto area) you check your bag when you pick up your ticket and don’t see it again until you arrive… I have never even been in a situation where the circumstance of someone asking about the contents of my bag was realistic.  I know they get scanned and examined inside the system, but they aren’t hunting you down in the airport to ask about it unless there’s a gun or a bomb.  You aren’t you to get run down by the SWAT team for bringing your we-vibe on your honeymoon!

We have taken toys all around the world! Separate the batteries from the toy itself (or buy new ones when you arrive). We’ve never had a problem at all- my husband puts them in his luggage in a discreet looking leather toiletries bag.

Exactly what ImTheBoss said – if it’s going in your CHECKED luggage – you will drop it off when you check in, and then retrieve it at your destination. They will scan your luggage separately. They may open your bags and inspect items, but they wouldn’t be asking you directly “what is this?”.

Just take the batteries out. The security guards are adults, they likely know what it is, but you would hate for it to accidentally turn on and attract attention.

I got stopped last summer for a small wooden lighthouse souvenier. Now I’m terrified to take a sex toy. It was awful having to step aside while security went through my entire bag.

Is the process different if you’ve checked a bag? I’ve always just been a super careful packer and done carry on, but I think for my honeymoon I’ll just pay the extra and take a larger bag. Do you still put it through the scanner while you stand there?

I’m so uninformed about all of the airport stuff.

Edit — Just saw the posts confirming that checking a bag gets you out of the confrontation. I’ll totally do that then.

banana86:  Checked luggage; it won’t matter. Although, I’d definitely sanitize it before use in my destination since you never know who handled it during security screening. As far as carryon, twice, I have been asked about an adult toy. The first time, the TSA agent told me that the bag had to be re-scanned, and asked for permission to open the bag. I nodded and watched him the entire time. He opened it, started pushing stuff around, saw it, made a priceless face, quickly re-zipped the bag and handed it back to me without making eye contact, lol. I asked if anything was wrong and he sheepishly said “umm, there was umm something in your bag that looked suspicious on the scanner. You’re fine.” The next time, I had it in the little mesh zipper compartment at the top (where underwear or toiletries might go) and the agent asked me to open the bag myself. He took a look, said ok thanks and sent me on my way. In all cases, they knew exactly what it was and there was no need for explanation on my part. And even if so, I’m grown. What am I embarrassed about?  After that, I started removing the batteries and I’ve never been confronted again (although I’m not sure if these things are related).

banana86:  Batteries are fine for travel in checked luggage. The pp’s recommend removing them so nothing turns on when bumped.  Checked luggage gets beat the heck up, it’s very possible that something could get knocked into the on position.  It has happened to my husband more than once with toothbrushes, clarasonics, etc.  he never remember to remove them so it happens to him all the time.

Maybe I’m just a shameless hussy, but I’ve twice had my carry-on bag searched when I had a vibrator in it and wasn’t bothered at all. There’s no shame in having sex toys on a vacation and TSA agents see all kinds of crazy things. No one cares.

banana86:  I THINK (I’m not 100% sure) that batteries are an issue on a plane or there are certain regulations. I just recently flew and I’m pretty sure I saw something about batteries. It may be for carry on bags or for all bags in general…I don’t entirely remember. Just look at your airline’s policies and/or the airport regulations.

Unless you’re going to Dubai (or somewhere with similar laws), they won’t rifle through your checked luggage and find your sex toys.

True story, my husband and I were hauled into an airport holding room to answer to police about the illegal (!!) items we were trying to bring into the country…………………..

azbee:  Car batteries.  You aren’t allowed to carry on car batteries.  That’s what you saw.  Omg now I have some kind of monster sex toy that requires a car battery to power it in my head lol

I had to laugh b/c this DID happen to me–like, 15 years ago (circa 2001, when everyone was all high-wired). She took out my vibrator, just right there in the line, and was like, “What is this?”

I had no choice but to square my shoulders and say, “It’s my vibrator, ma’am.”

She totally smiled at me, threw it back in the bag, and was like, “Carry on, then!”

So if it DOES happen, just smile and…carry on πŸ˜‰
