Fiance is from SF, but we have both lived in So. Cal a majority of our lives. I feel like Nor/Central CA is a totally different region and I haven’t explored it! We will be getting married in SF and want to drive back down along the coast, making stops along the way in the span of at least three-four days. I’m very interested in Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur, seeing the Hearst Castle, Solvang, Santa Barbara. Any suggestions on things to see along the way and how long we should stay overnight in certain areas? Any inns/hotel/B&B suggestions as well? Thank you~

All of the places you mentioned are things I was going to suggest! Look for hotel and activity deals on groupon, you can usually find some great stuff. Do Carmel and Monterrey as one, they’re only about 15 mins from each other. Maybe plan to get to Monterrey one morning, explore during the day, stay in a hotel overnight. The next day you can visit Carmel, do 17 mile drive, and hop on the 1 through Big Sur. Visit Hearst castle that afternoon/evening, and stay in a hotel in San Simeon that night. If you want to try and do some hiking in big sur break that drive up over two days and camp somewhere along the coast (I recommend the Lime Kiln state park and campground for easy camping and hiking). There are some beautiful hotels along the big sur coast too if you prefer not to camp, they’re just more expensive than you’ll get in Monterrey or San Simeon. When you visit Santa Barbara you should look into hotels in Ojai or Ventura to save some $ (Santa Barbara in general is notoriously over priced). Hmmm if I think of anything else I’ll let you know!

I’ve always wanted to stay at the Tickle Pink Inn in Carmel!

Definitely Carmel & Monterey for one stop (1 day and night might be enough depending on how much you want to do). Big Sur is gorgeous and there are some charming Inns along the coast. Also when you make it to Hearst Castle, instead of staying in San Simeon keep going south a bit (about a half hour) to a town called Cambria. It’s charming and there are some great B&Bs there! (I stayed at the Squibb House). Avila Beach/San Luis Obispo is also a great area and there are some fun wineries in nearby Edna Valley and Paso Robles. Any father south I am not very familiar with. Sounds like it will be a great trip!

Oh, Ojai! I hear it’s beautiful! Do you know of places to see/things to do in Carmel/Monterey? Or even San Simeon besides the Hearst Castle? Thanks!
The Tinkle Pink Inn is definitely in the running!
Any specific suggestions on must-see/things to do in these places? Wine tasting seems fun. I’m not familiar with Edna Valley, but I’ll look into it. Thank you!

The aquarium in Monterey is well worth a visit. And the Mission in Santa Barbara as well.

If you go to Hearst Castle and also want to go wine tasting in the Edna Valley, stay in San Luis Obispo instead of San Simeon. San Simeom is wayyy tiny. Edna Valley is the winery region right outside of San Luis Obispo, which is a cute fun town, or Cambria, like the pp suggests. Since you live in SoCal, don’t waste any time in Pismo Beach. Also you might not be able to see the castle and do wine tasting in the same day because wineries close at 5.

How many days would you suggest taking off for the drive and exploring from SF to OC?
