I would be open to purchasing from any B&M store, but would have to have very specific information about the ring.  For instance, Wal-Mart (and Sam’s Club) actually have some very nice engagement rings, with very good specs.  Even with a jewelry store, sometimes if you buy a complete e-ring (not a semi-mount) you chance getting what is called a “promotional grade” stone, which could be very included or not a good cut.

No it is not an option at a department store. you have 30-90 days to return it that’s it.

Actually, my ring is from a no-returns store. Which is fine by me. But if you are interested in an upgrade, I’d stick with good ol Mr. Shane.

I’ve heard great things about ShaneCo after sales service. I would stick with them.

Since you might want to upgrade, I wouldn’t go with the department store, unless your upgrade is to buy a new ring, but still wanting the old one for sentimental reasons

@heyymegg I don’t know about department stores, but I had to put in a vote for Shane Co. – Fiance got my ring there and I love it, and the customer service and care plan (free!) is awesome!

i have a setting from shane co.. i had a great experience with them.

i wouldn’t suggest a dept store.. you want somewhere that will stand behind thier jewelry. if something happens to my setting i can always go and take it back to get work done, resized etc. you dont have that option with dept stores

Honestly, Macy’s and jcp do not have have high quality stones. If it were me, I would pick Shane. BUT wait. I see. You are in the bay area!? You should go to Steve Padis in SF look it up! 101 Utah st! Thats where my ring and center stone is from and they are a wholesale jeweler. You will get much more for your money and they have a Huge selection for ANY budget.  They will work down from the sticker price though for sure.
