I’m making sugar cookies on Tuesday to take with us to my grandparents’ for Christmas. I’m making icing up there so my cousins can decorate with me, but I want to have the cookies done ahead of time. I’m much older than all my cousins (the closest is 10 while I’m 22) and I don’t get to see them much, so I thought this would be a nice thing to do together.
But I need a good sugar cookie recipe. One that won’t make them too crispy or hard within a couple days. What’s your favorite recipe for cookies? I have cutters to do stars, Christmas trees and gingerbread men, would you suggest any others?

I’m going to try these ones tonight or tomorrow. They got awesome reviews on Allrecipes and I also found other sites linking to them. Just remember that sugar cookie dough needs to be refrigerated overnight, so start the process a day early.
ETA: The cutters you have sound great and like fun shapes to decorate! I find the more complicated ones don’t look like what they are (bells, Santa, etc) and are hard to decorate. If you were going to add, maybe a stocking, reindeer or candy cane would be good ones too. I find the reindeers antlers break off easily though, so they aren’t my favourites 😉 Sounds like you guys are going to have a really fun afternoon!

My moms recipe:
3/4 cup butter or margarine
2/3 cup white granulated sugar
1 large egg
1 tsp (5ml) vanilla
1 3/4 cup flour
Beat butter & sugar until creamy. Add egg and vanilla. Gradually mix in flour. Do not over beat.
Roll out on floured surface to 1/8 inches thick, cut and bake at 350 F for 12-15 minutes, or until edges are golden brown.
*If the dough is too soft to be workable chill for 30mins-1hour.
**I find in a hotter oven (like gas) you only need to bake 10-12 minutes.
