  • Wedding: June 2014 - Flushing Town Hall

@fashionbug:

I’m still in the planning stages, but I’ve been sticking to this budget like a dog with a bone. Trying to have a decent wedding for around $30K (at the groom’s insistance… I wanted to have it for under $25K, and then I realized it was impossible for what I wanted).

Venue (Flushing Town Hall): $3800; it’s a raw space, but they have their own sound and lighting system, which pretties the place up without too much extra decoration cost. I rented the whole building for 10 hours (with a midweek discount), which includes the garden, a gallery, and a theater.

Catering: ~$8K for 150+ guests; This had the potential to be the biggest expense, so I cheated. I’m having my parents reach out to high end Chinese restaurants to ask about an under the table catering deal (most places don’t offer it as a service up front).

Alcohol: ~$2500; wholesale everything, and hiring student bartenders. FTH lets you bring beer, wine, and champagne on your own (need a license for hard liquor).

Dresses: $344 (4 bridesmaids) + $500 (mine); Etsy custom-made (MermaidBridal). You really have to be careful and triple and quadruple check the reputation of the shop before you choose. I’m getting my bridesmaids’ dresses made first, and then if I like the quality, I’ll get mine made there as well. Updates on how it turns out.

Tuxes: tabling this for now, but I’ve set aside $500 for rentals for FH and his 4 groomsmen.

Veil, favor boxes, paper and tulle decorations: <$200; Taobao.com. I can’t really read or write Chinese, so I needed a LOT of parental help to navigate this Chinese equivalent of Amazon. But spending $12 USD on 200 favor boxes? Yes please.

Flowers: $1000 (DIY); fiftyflowers.com. I figured if I was going to put in the work to get super cheap flowers, they were going to be NICE. A lot of other Bees I’ve read about have gotten bulk flowers for ~$600, so this cost can definitely be lowered. This is cost for my bouquet, the wedding party flowers, AND centerpieces.

DJ: $500, Stukwan.com. Recommended to me by the director of facilities of FTH (Stu DJed his wedding), so we shall see. I was wary of the quality given the super low cost, but the high praise ultimately won me over. Updates on how it turns out.

Photography & Videography: $3500. I spoke to a number of companies, and one offered me a discount. Definitely ask around, and be up front about what you can afford. You may be surprised.

Invitations: $0-200 max; Family friend’s print shop. I know, this is super unhelpful for budgeters looking for inspiration, but I also calculated the cost for me to DIY my own letterpressed pocket invites with luxe cotton paper, custom printing plates, and all new equipment and paint straight off Amazon, and it was pretty good! ~$500-600, which is pretty good for letterpress. But it’s a lot of research, and I already have my hands full with other DIY undertakings. Check out boxcarpress.com.

Cake: I’m budgeting $500. A trick I read somewhere when I was helping to plan my friend’s wedding is to have a small 2-3 tier cake, and then an identical flavor sheet cake to make up the difference. Once it’s cut and in people’s mouths, no one will care, and it’s SO much cheaper. The cake toppers I’m asking a friend’s sister to make for me.

Rings: $1600 for my engagement ring and the two wedding bands. One word: moissanite. I’m glad I found out about moissanite, because I was actually really loathe to shell out $$$ on diamonds.

Hair & Makeup: $1400 for 7 people including me (DGAF, I’m splurging on this one.)

Photo Booth: $500. I don’t really have any other entertainment for my guests, so I thought they might enjoy this. I got a Groupon for 60% off.

Rentals: ~$1000. This number is the only one that’s actually totally made up. I’m just guessing here (& giving myself a large budget buffer).
