Yesterday I proposed to my girlfriend. We met 4 years ago, been together 1½ years.
I feel deeply and fast, and we’ve been nothing but clear about our expectations and needs from the beginning. We’ve spoken about our value systems, career, marriage, priorities. but I am glad that I waited (thanks Bees) until now to propose.
My proposal went not quite as planned, instead somehow even better. I made red love hearts from craft paper that said “Say Yes”, and with a small group of friends & photographer, headed out to a scenic viewpoint at the top of a mountain. My girlfriend was out “helping a friend” set some things up, while I was supposedly on a marketing photo shoot.
Friend convinced my girlfriend to go to lookout, which my girlfriend thought was a bit daft – friend suggested that another friend had said it was good. My girlfriend is the sweet kind of person who will humour her friends, and happily went along.
They ride in and see us, and the red hearts, and my girlfriend thinks its a marketing thing… then I ask if she’ll hike up a little further, saying: look, I have a beer for you! (long running joke, beer & cheese) She hikes up, and I can see she’s starting to clue in that something is up… I hand her the letter I’ve written.
It’s long – I’m standing there watching her read… and she’s like ‘f it, I’m skipping to the end”, which was perfect. The last lines said “I trust myself. I beleive in us. I want the world to know what we do alresdy. Will You Marry Me?”
She looks up and I drop to one knee & open the ring box and say “Will you marry me?”
She drops to her knees, kissing me and breathes “yes”
I think then we repeated that a few times over, ended with me yelling joyfully “OMF, will you f—ing marry me?” and her hollering back into the wind “F YAASSSSS”, and I heard from our friends that they were all cheering. Sometime in there I put the ring on her finger, she swore a little more about how beautiful and sparkly and unique and perfect it is.
I didn’t even notice through all that that our photog had snuck up beside us, or that our friends had cheered, waves signs and took pictures/video. All that existed in the mountaintop in that moment was her & I.
