After months of anxiously waiting, I finally managed to ask my girlfriend to marry me, and she said yes! The proposal didn’t happen at all like I had planned, but I wouldn’t have had it any other way.
I surprised her on Friday morning by telling her I had already planned a date. She said she knew something was up because I set an alarm for 9am, which I never do on the weekend, but she didn’t suspect anything beyond that. We had a great tour of the restaurant, then got to cooking. We cooked 6 or 7 meals that morning (duck, lobster, bbq shrimp, english muffins with hollandaise sauce, etc.) and got super stuffed. It was all so tasty though!
Anyway, after spending several hours in the kitchen learning a bunch of different techniques, we had a nice cocktail history lesson and got to try a bunch of different drinks (we had a tiny sip of each one because we knew what was coming up). After that, the restaurant’s wine guy gave us a wine tasting of 30 or so different wines, which was just awesome. He had a great story to tell for each varietal, and it was a fantastic experience. I had planned on proposing during the wine tasting, but the setting just didn’t feel right, so I decided to wing it.
After the wine tasting, we had a six course dinner at a special dining room that’s part of the kitchen, but it’s glassed off to provide some privacy. I was getting nervous about finding the opportunity to propose, when all of a sudden one of the chefs gets my attention. He said, “you’re going to propose tonight?! Give me the ring and we’ll make your final course really special.” So I handed him the ring box and went back to the meal. Right before the final course, the chef comes over and tells us that they’d like to move us to the courtyard for dessert. They seat us at a table (we’re the only ones out there), and then proceed to bring out one of every type of dessert on the menu. Then they bring out a final plate that has my ring box on it, and it said, “Will you marry me?” in chocolate script around the plate. She got really overwhelmed (I did too) and didn’t say anything, so I went into a short speech I had prepared. Then I got down on one knee and asked her the big question, and she said yes! It was a crazy time, and my face hurt from smiling so much. Needless to say, I’m stoked about marrying this girl, and I’m thankful for all the help you Bees have given me!
Now we’ve got to plan a wedding for next May, which seems like just around the corner! I’m sure I’ll be lurking some more around here for ideas for our big day.
Also, this was super long, but I figured someone might enjoy reading it.
