Honestly I would head over to Davids or Alfred Angelo and try on all different styles. It can sometime surprise you what looks good on you!

@parapluie:  I love Alfred Angelo! There were a few dresses I tried on at both that I never thought I would like and did. Good luck!

Well, hello! I am also a short and full-figured bride – 5’2 and size 18, so pretty much the same proportions as you! Dress shopping was a little frustrating because so many dresses seem to be made for much taller brides – things like, the ruching meant to come down to the hips made it all the way to my thigh, the lacework couldn’t be hemmed down to my height, etc. I had the most luck with David’s Bridal and Alfred Angelo – they had the most dresses in my size to actually try on, by far. I ended up going with this dress:

(Sorry so huge!).  It’s AA 801.

Have you started trying dresses on yet? Or still in the just looking phase?

@parapluie:  Aww, thanks! I am SO happy with my dress.  Good luck with your appointment – I would encourage you to try on as many styles as you can just to get an idea about what looks good on you and what kind of look you want to go for. And definitely let your consultant make some pics – my dress was one my consultant pulled for me! Have fun! πŸ™‚

I have a similar shape, these are some of the dresses I originally looked at:

Generally, on an “apple” shape, empire or drop wasits look best, and avoiding waist details like a bow or sash that draw attention to the midsection.  I would recommend going with a sweetheart or scoop/halter neckline.

Do you have any idea what kind of dress you want? Lace? Satin? Long train or short?

I am 5″2 and wear a street 18/20

Here are some of the ones i tried on…. it is pretty obvious which were bad and which were good becuase of the height issue.. All of them were from davids bridal

This one was bad…. cut me in a bad spot and made me look super short

T3039

This one was ok, but the torso was a bit long on me

9T9642

This one was so flattering… i wish i had bought it

9WG3243

This was the first dress i bought and ended up returning it

CWG352

This is the actual dress i bought. I had to exchange my 1st gown and had to pic something that was within the same price range…. i do love her, but i wish i had gotten the other one because it was $1000 cheaper!

@parapluie:  Thanks πŸ™‚ I still have a bit of dress regret for the 3rd one. It was only $400 so they wouldn’t let me swap the oleg cassini for such an inexpensive dress becuase it was $1200 after taxes…

Another peice of advice when you go to try on dresses…. wear decent underware. I wore horrible/”that time of the month” undies to my first apt. and i was mortified when i realized that they come into the fitting room with you!
