I have to start shopping for a wedding dress soon, and I’m kind of dreading it because I’m worried that the beautiful dresses I see online won’t look good after being hemmed to fit me. I’m only 5’1 and standard wedding dresses are usually cut to fit women who are 5’7 (and the models on wedding websites are at least 5’10!). I’ve seen so many pictures of dresses where I think, “That dress looks beautiful on her, but I could never pull it off.” I plan on wearing 3-inch heels at my wedding, but obviously any dress is going to look very different on me than it does on someone who’s 7 or 8 inches taller.
So Bees who are 5’3 or shorter, please post pics of you in your dress! As a bonus, if you could post before and after pics (before alterations and after alterations), that would really help me see how the overall look of the dress changes. I’m especially worried about dresses that have a lot of detail at the bottom, like lace or beading. For example, here’s one of the dresses I’m considering:
On me, there would be a lot less skirt, but the beading goes up pretty high. Would it even be possible to reattach all that beading after the skirt has been hemmed 6 inches?

I’m 5’ 0” I wore 4 in heels in this picture
In this one I had taken them off:
Some designers will let you order a custom length or a petite length. Ask about it when you go dress shopping. I actually didn’t have this dress altered at all besides added a bustle.

I’m 5’3″ and was wearing about 1/2 inch kitten heels. My seamstress was able to hem from the waist so I wouldn’t lose any detailing on the bottom of the skirt and it worked out perfectly. I was afraid I wouldn’t like the ball-gown skirt being short but I couldn’t see myself in any other gown once I tried this one. I say try on the ones you like and you will be surprised that the right dress will definitely come your way. Good luck!

This was the unaltered dress on the day I picked it up from the store. I’m standing on a pedestal.

I don’t know much about dressmaking – but as a general note, dresses tend to be taken up at the waist seam (if there is one) so the whole skirt is lifted up – rather than the bottom (whereby you would lose some of the bottom hem lace detail)
so don’t let that put you off too much..

4’11, not sure how high my shoes were but I definitely had flats on most of the night (and ran around holding my dress up all night because everyone kept stepping on my bustle lmao)
