My wedding is in 6 months and I was just curious to hear from others how they faired planning their short engagements, the stress of getting things done/booked, how it all came together, or how you are doing in the midst of it all!
We’ve got ceremony and reception booked, my dress is in the process of being ordered, my wedding band is ordered, just need to size my FI’s finger and order his, making a guest list, Save-The-Date Cards to go out soon. what other things need immediate attention?

Reception being booked already- does hat include catering/menu? I would say that’s important to do pretty soon. DJ or band? Cake (if you’re having one). Photographer/videographer?
Our wedding is in a little more than 5 months and I think we’re behind in planning haha oh well, we have the reception venue booked and ideas for everything else. im probably renting a dress, so I’m not super worried about that at least. And his wedding band is easy enough to get!

califlorican: We do not have a catering menu yet, we really want to do a casual buffet instead of a plated meal, but yes we need to figure that out for sure. As far as DJs and photo/videographers go my Fiance has an interesting past, used to be a DJ, and knows many DJs so he is going to ask of of his friends to do it, presently he is in marketing and knows a lot of photo/videographers so he is going to try to get hooked up from his circle. And lastly, we are actually thinking about doing something totally off the cuff cake wise, there is a local donut shop here that is extremely famous for it’s crazy donut creations. My Fiance also has a hook up there because one of the owners used to be in a band with him, so we are seriously considering asking them to collaborate with something special just for our wedding (I mean seriously, who doesn’t love donuts). If that doesn’t work out, my mom is the queen of DIY and actually made a beautiful cake for my sister’s wedding, like so unbelievable I’m going to include photos because this cake was insanely gorgeous, had ZERO fondant on it, she just worked the icing until it was smooth as marble.
Yeah, im constantly worried about falling behind, but we talked about getting married long before we got engaged and talked about things we wanted. i think the biggest thing is just knowing what you want and having ideas. His wedding band was easy too; I showed him one I liked and he said “Oh yeah! That’s good, do that one.”

i had a 7 month engagement. i booked all my vendors in the first 2 months. not too much going on in the middle, then the last 2 months before wedding, i finalized all details.
it was a pretty stress free time for me.

I think you’re in a good spot. My wedding is in January and we don’t have a caterer yet lol. It’s coming…
Once you get venue, flowers (bouts and bouquets), DJ, food, photography, attire done… which is sounds like you’re mostly done, the rest is details.

ajillity81: we had an 8 month engagement, and I had exactly the same experience. Vendors were booked within the first couple weeks, then there was just taking care of everything else. there was very little to do in the middle, then the last two months were pretty busy, with the last two weeks being the busiest. i thought it was all pretty easy though!

We had an 8 month engagment, and even less when I think back to when we booked our venues – after setting the date and ensuring that availability was still there. We had all major things done by mid-April… and everything that had an arrival time (dresses mainly), came in WAY earlier than anticipated.
We first did the reception hall, since it was a hotel. They have all the food and all of that stuff. Next up was the officiant, ceremony venue, band, photographer, and I looked for my dress and the Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses. We made our own flowers (silk), but had checked around for pricing before making that decision. I also called the bankery we got our cake from a couple months before, just to get the date reserved. I ordered what we needed last week.
Our wedding is 2.5 weeks away and a lot of stuff was also donw within the last month… so you sit for awhile. Yes, you can start on things (like DIY items, or gifts) earlier too.

Unfathomably: you’re doing great! we got engaged in july 2013, but didn’t start planning anything until the 1st of november…which gave us exactly 6 months, and other than the venue, dress and photographer, we didn’t do anything until januay with the wedding coming up in may! it was a whirlwind, but with the internet at our fingertips and a lot of focus, we pulled it off with no problem!

We’re getting married the end of April, and had a “short” engagement as well. Until we got engaged and started planning, I had no idea 9 months was considered to be a short engagement! I feel like vendors are the only thing you need way in advance, that and the wedding dress. Then you start getting into stuff you can’t really do until the time gets closer (e.g. flowers). Don’t forget about an officiant though! That’s important : ) One thing I wish we would have started earlier was music selection. It’s becoming a timely process because for things like the ceremony I have no idea what to play. So I have to google the typical stuff, then listen to it, then make a decision. It’s a long process that (for me at least) gets old kinda fast.
Also–in regards to the donuts, I just have to ask, are you by chance in Oregon and referring to Voodoo Donuts?

scarlettbegonias87: My father is actually a pastor and will be our officiant! We are lucky we have so many hookups lol
No I live in St. Louis and the place is called Strange Donuts, but I’ve heard of that place and that it’s pretty similar!

Unfathomably: How wonderfully awesome that your dad is going to be the one to marry you guys! And, crossing my fingers the donut idea works out, because that would be super cool.

scarlettbegonias87: Lol, I was wondering if it was VooDoo Donuts too.

creativeplannertobee: <br />Haha I’ve only been there once, it was a total madhouse! The donuts were delicious though.

We had a 7 week engagement and everything turned out perfect. It wasn’t a massive wedding with hundreds of guests cause that isn’t us. Small wedding with the most important people there and evening food and entertainment!
Couldn’t have asked for better – although night before I had a panic that I didn’t have my dress forgetting I left it at my friends that day lol.
Hope everything goes well and your day is magical.
