At first I wanted my Bridesmaid or Best Man to wear short dresses because of the summer heat and wanted them to be comfortable. But after talking to them and them trying different styles they decided they wanted a long dress better because its more of a formal wedding and they said they felt more elegant. Its something different because they can wear a short dress any time they go out but long dresses are more for special ocassions.

Talk to them and see what they like. Consider the wedding theme, location, and weather. Look at different styles and choose one that fits your wedding.

I went short. Unless its a very formal wedding I would do a long dress.

I like short better.  I think most of the long dresses aren’t the most flattering.  The short are typically more re-wearable.  Unless it was super formal, I’d always go short.

I think it depends on the material – I LOVE long chiffon dresses, because I think they are so beautiful and flowy. If it is a stiffer, more structured material, I vastly prefer short dresses!

Agreed with PeachBee.  Chiffon dresses are beautiful when long! Otherwise, I like short as well.

I am having my girls wear long, but that is because I am getting married in January.  I didn’t like the idea of bare legs in the winter.  If people feel pale and don’t like tanning they might not be comfortable in short.  Plus bare legs could get cold.

We are having a mid sized, more casual wedding in August.  I am having my girls wear short dresses.

i think both are nice, but my girls are wearing short dresses. i’m having an outdoor reception at the end of the summer, so it’s going to be very warm and i want them to be as comfortable as possible. another thing is, floor length has a tendency to make short girls look even shorter and 2 of my 3 bridesmaids are under 5′ tall, hah. plus, i think they’ll get more use out of a shorter dress than a long one.

I almost picked long dresses because I saw a picture of BMs in long dresses at a winter wedding, and that kind of stuck with me since I was having a winter wedding too. My BMs ended up in short dresses because the dresses we got were such a good price! My BMs looked great in short dresses, even in the snow! We had a laid back, rustic wedding at a sugar shack cabin in Quebec.

I would never have even considered long dresses, personally.

I think long dresses can be okay for a formal wedding, if they are very well chosen, but in general I think most long bridesmaids dresses look ridiculous. (sorry, that’s just my opinion)

Then again, I find the concept of matching a little silly as well (but I couldn’t convince my BM’s of that). I’m just on the non-traditional side I guess.

I like short better in general, but especially for a small, August wedding.

I agree with PeachBee  and pengoala (: I love long chiffon dresses and shorter more structured dresses.

I wanted short, but the girls wanted long… Long it is. They look great, so it’s all good. It is an evening wedding mid-June, so the weather could go either way

I think both can look really nice.  My dress is long, but my bm dresses will be short as it will be hot.
