Yah, I think you’ll regret it if you don’t get a bustle. You could check out a ballroom bustle if you don’t like the look of other bustles.

I’m doing a “waterfall” bustle like this one (I got this pic off of google images).  Basically it’s just pulled up in three points and gathered at the point where your dress starts to flare (mine is the same shape as yours).  I wish I had a pic of my actual bustle but sadly I don’t.  I prefer this to the traditional bustle for mermaid dresses.
