    My jewler always told me if it is under a half carat you can get away with a 4 prong but it is more you should make sure it is secure with a 6 prong setting.  I have a carat with a 6 prong setting and there is no way I would go with a 4 prong setting, the extra two prongs makes it very secure.

    If you are worried about how it will look…go to a local store and try them on…you will get a better feel for what type of setting you prefer.

    I have a .30ct solitaire in a 6 prong setting. I love it! I don’t feel it overwhelms my stone at all.

    Something about the 4 prong settings doesn’t feel right to me, personally. I don’t know why. They’re lovely, but not for me.

    I love six prongs.  I have a six prong solitaire and don’t regret it for a second.

    I have a .80 solitare diamond in a 4 prong setting on a 5.75 finger, I personally prefer the look of the 4 prong setting. Honestly, I think it’s whatever look your prefer.

    @aangel1004:  I have fat fingers (size 9) – it’s a little over 1 carat.
