I opened this one thinking that I would be on the “suck it up and go” side, but after reading your post I am very much on the “oh heck no” side. That just sounds terrible. Only you know how big a deal it will be if you don’t go, but I would stick to using the valid health concerns as reasons (the fleas and the smoking) for not attending. Seriously, those are good reasons not to go. Good luck!

@littletree:  +1.  I was all set to tell you that, even though you and your Future Mother-In-Law do not have a good relationship, you should still go.  However, you had me at “fleas” and “smoking.”

The only reason I personally wouldn’t go is the smoking. I have a nicotine allergy and I will get very, very, very sick if I am around someone who is smoking, especially indoors.

Thats tough! I voted to suck it up and go but now I am not sure. What does you Fiance say? I think if its really important for him to have you there then go but if hes okay with you missing this one I’d bail.

@eocenia:  You feel bad because you are a good person! I would feel bad too, but that doesn’t mean I would go. Maybe make an appointment that day – to volunteer or donate blood or something, ha Smile. Really though, it speaks to your character that you are worried about it, but  that doesn’t mean you should suffer.

You totally deserve an award, but you have to suck it up and go–it’s the adult thing to do. Plus they are elderly. How would you feel if they die a couple of weeks after the event and your Fiance didn’t get to see them. Talk about guilt!

Before you go, put on some bug spray, take and antihistime, advil and big smile.

PS- do they need some extra help? There is no reason their cats should have fleas. They can go to the vets and get flea medication. Maybe one the kind things you can do is offer to take the cats to vets and pay for some flea medication (it’s expensive). The cats must be miserable too!

The fleas and smoking are dealbreakers.  Maybe it’s time for the godparents to let someone else host the family Christmas.  Your FH should address the issue with the family and he should not feel bad about missing out for those reasons.  It is unacceptable to have company over to your home if your home is infested with fleas.

@Brielle:  Same. I’m very allergic to smoke and always dreaded going to my ex’s parents’ house because they also smoked inside. I’d have to keep going outside to breathe, and would shower and do laundry IMMEDIATELY after we got home. Gross.
