I’m torn on whether or not to go to a “girls night out” tonight.
Backstory: a friend of mine organized this night out to the opera ( which isn’t necessarily my ” thing”, but I always like an excuse to dress up lol). So- the tickets were prepurchased ( $40.00) and we all planned to meet at her house and ride together ( it is 30 miles, one way). I only know my friend organizing it, and the other women I have met once at a painting party, but don’t have a close relationship with any of them.
Today she ( my friend) sent me a text stating that she was sick, and couldn’t make it. I get another text from another girl going, saying that since my friend is sick, we will all just meet there separately.
So, now I need to drive 60 miles round trip, sit at an opera with people I really don’t know and I kind of want to just eat the $40 and back out.
I work in this city, and I make this drive 5x a week, so on the weekends I am really, really reluctant to drive back to the city.
What would you do? Eat the $40 and stay in tonight with the hubs or put on my big girl panties and make the trip, make some new friends …. hmmm….

It’s a lot of hassle, but you never know… you might have an awesome night!

I probably wouldn’t go, to be honest. Girls nights are really fun, but not if you don’t really know anyone. If your mutual friend was still going, I’d definitely still go … But it could be a little awkward if you barely know the other girls (not to mention the added drive time). Also, you mentioned the opera wasn’t really your thing anyway … It’s not like you’d be missing out on seeing your favorite band in concert or something.

@Mrs_Amanda: I would probably stay in and just lose the $40…although, it doesn’t take much to convince me to stay in. I too have a long commute every single day on top of a long day…just relax! 🙂

@newname_99: I think they’re nice enough, they all know each other a little better than I do, so it could be third wheel-ish, but from what I know they’re pretty nice.

I’ve decided to go. DH said he would ride into town with me and meet a friend for drinks while I opera it up to make it seem more worthwhile lol.

I wouldn’t go, but you should make up a good excuse so you don’t offend them. You’ll probably see them again, and flaking tonight might make things awkward in the future, if they care about that kind of thing.

@Mrs_Amanda: I’d go but I love opera! Which one is it?

Try putting the tickets on Craigslist ? Can your frihi give you her ticket so you can take someone you do know?

If you’re watching an opera, you’re not actually talking to anyone. So in theory, it doesn’t really matter if you know them or not – it matters whether you want to go to an opera.

I wouldn’t go, but then again I’m trying to decide whether to go to my kinda-friend’s house party a few blocks away. Haha if I can’t bring myself to leave the house for that, I can’t imagine going to the opera with people I don’t know.

I would probably go….it would seem like a waste of money not to and then you could probably miss out on making new friends.
I see that you decided to go out though, so have fun!
