@Lulume:  You must suffer from the same thing I do, where you feel obligated to appease people, or would feel bad for mentioning it to him during the shoot but now you are thinking you could probably get someone better? Hire a professional, full-time photographer who lives for weddings. The reason this is so important is because a photographer who does a lot of weddings knows how to get the right shot at the right time. They know about expectations from their clients. They know how to properly touch up photos and also state a time line in the contract as to when you will get the pictures. Do not hire this person. If you have already had doubts then it’s best to just move on. It’s business, not personal.

It is not customary for photographers to edit every single photo. What he did by editing a selection of the most quality photos was exactly what other photographers do. If that is your only problem, then I don’t see the need to change to someone else. However if you didn’t feel like he captured the essence of your relationship or if you just didn’t mesh well with him, that is another story.

If you don’t love the pictures then don’t have him be your wedding photographer.  You don’t want to take that chance.

If you’re not happy with him, I would definitely get a new one.

If you don’t like his photographs then don’t hire him. What was he like during your engagement session – was he friendly? Did you click with him? Do you think he would be professional at your wedding – would he be good at being subtle and not getting in the way of your ceremony, while also getting all of the photos that you and your Fiance want? There are so many factors that go into hiring a great photographer who you’re happy with, so make sure you answer those questions before you hire him!

And to answer your question: nope, there’s nothing wrong with hiring a different photographer for your engagement session than for the wedding, couples do that all the time! Just make sure that if you hire someone new, meet them in person and make sure you like them. You’ll spend a lot of time with them on your wedding day! And ask to see a FULL wedding album, not just blog posts on the photographer’s website – you want to make sure they take consistently good photos. I would read reviews on Weddingwire.com before hiring anybody, and see if there are any patterns of positive or negative reviews.

I would love to see some of your engagement photos! Can you share a few?

@Lulume:  I’d talk to someone new. I think the main purpose of engagement photos is to do a test run for the wedding.

If you don’t like the photographer, pick a new one.  His skill isn’t going to change over a few motnhs, and you’ll be nervous about how the photos turn out during the wedding, so you won’t be as relaxed as you could be!

@Lulume:  Thanks.  For some reason I had to refresh the page a bunch of times before they loaded.  Weird.

Anyways, I agree with the other posters that if you’re not comfotable with the photographer or the pictures than you will just keep worrying about how the wedding pictures are going to turn out.  Go with someone that your’re comfortable with and trust.
