You can get away without a car. We only used ours to go to the Bishop Museum and to the north shore. If you want to go out at night there were tons of cabs too.

You won’t need a car for anything in Honolulu itself. If you want to go around the island, you can do that easily with a day pass for the bus, BUT, it is your honeymoon.

I would rent a car for the day that you want to drive to the north shore. Treat yourselves to a convertible for the one day, and be green on the bus the rest of the time.

Many of the best things about O’ahu are outside Waikiki/Honolulu. TheBus is great, though and would probably suffice for much of your stay. I’d recommend renting a car for a few days if you can, though, so you can explore the island.

Though I am all for public transportation this is your honeymoon so rent a car.  We drove all over the island when we were there since there is so much to do outside Honolulu.  It was nice to be able to do what  we wanted without time restrictions i.e. it is a 40 minute drive to the North Shore but in a bus it would take longer, last bus leaves at XX time though you would like to stay longer, etc.
