My parents are hosting a rather swanky party to celebrate our engagement. They’re going all out because FH and I plan to have a long engagement.
The venue and chef/staff are set, and an event stylist is currently being retained. I’ve been put in charge of ordering invites. Since the engagement party isn’t for a few months, should I be ordering Save-The-Date Cards to send out ASAP, with invitations to follow about a month before the event?
I really love stationary and have no budget parameters, so the idea of having Save-The-Date Cards and invites seems like a good idea to me, but is it overzealous and self-involved? I don’t know if that would be off putting to my guests, though after the engagement party, they won’t hear from me for another 18 months!

i think an invitation is enough. a save the date for a party is a little overkill.

@letigre: no, just send an invitation

Invitations, yes. STDs? No.

You can let people know ahead of time but save the dates? Overdoing it. Invitations are fine though

No save-the-date for an engagement party. Go nuts on the invites instead.

Etiquette Snob here… lol
Save-The-Date Cards have in many ways taken the place of an Engagement Announcement in the Social Pages of a Newspaper…
I LOVE the idea that your Parents are going to host an Engagement Party for you… that is awesome.
I’d send out the Invites to that event… and then when your Wedding is about a year out you have a choice… send out an STD or do the good old fashioned Newspaper “Engagement Announcement” (aka Impending Wedding Announcement)
The choice is yours.
Hope this helps,

@This Time Round: thanks! Your input was what I was looking for. I need an etiquette snob in my life, haha.
