I think you should always send thank you cards when people give you gifts if you were not there to thank them in person.

For myself, I am pretty strict with writing thank you notes for everything (well, not everything, but any kind of big gift). So we wrote thank you notes for engagement gifts even though we’re not having a party. It’s a nice way to say that you received (moreso if they sent it through the mail and not in person) and appreciate their thought.

For our grandmothers who sent us cards with checks (to go out and celebrate), we just called them to thank them profusely.  But if someone sent an actual object, I think writing a note is good form.  Especially if it’s been a while, because now it’s too late to call.

You should write thank you cards any time anyone gives you a gift. It doesn’t have to be super formal. Just pick up a cute pack of stationary and scribble a simple “Thank you so much for thinking of us! We really appreciate it. Hope you’re doing well!” It just takes a few minutes of your time, and it will either: 1) make anyone who would think it’s rude not to get a thank you card happy, or 2) show people who weren’t expecting one that you are grateful and super polite.

?  Of course.  Any gift = thank you note.

Always send thank you notes!  Nobody is ever going to receive a Thank You and think to themselves “man, how rude of that person to thank me for my thoughtful gift.”
