Was it mailed directly from a store?  They might be able to take care of it for you.  If she clearly purchased it and sent it herself, then I would tell her.  No shame in that!

Most shipping companies (UPS/FedEx) will not let you make insurance claims toward shipments that arrive broken unless they packaged it themselves. I’ve been through this several times. It’s how they get away with overcharging you so much to pack your box for you at the UPS Store/FedEX Kinkos.

I say yes tell her because I personally would want to know if something showed up broken.  Nobody wants to give someone a broken gift and it’s not your fault or hers that it came that way.  Maybe she had insurance on it?

Yes, I would say she has more ability to fix the problem…however, because she shipped it versus the store, they likely won’t be able to do anything about it…

I would definitely let her know, bc if I were the gift sender I would want to know!

I wouldn’t tell her.  I hightly doubt that she insured it and you have to report that right away anyhow.  I don’t see how, considering she packaged it herself, telling her would help.  I would probably just reframe it and if she ever asked about it on your wall I would just tell her the truth- the frame got smashed in shipping.  She will still probably feel bad at that point, but won’t feel obligated to get you a new one.  I don’t think it is worth telling her.  Just get a frame.
