So I won a free boudoir shoot with a local photographer… I’ve read that if people own their own business you don’t need to tip, but since I won the package, I’m not paying anything for it… do you think I should tip him or no? Thanks for your help!

It really depends on the size of the business. If it’s a family shop, tipping would be kind of strange. If it’s a large studio with many photographers, give them a tip.

@AlwaysSunny: It’s just him- and he has a makeup artist/hair stylist come for the shoots to help with styling advice, etc…

Hmm…I wouldn’t tip then. I know that it seems strange because you’re getting it for free but it would also be strange to tip a business owner.

I probably would, honestly. Though, I don’t think it would be rude of you not to. I would definitely name drop for him if he does a good job, that would be a nice “tip” for him and probably all he’s expecting.

I agree with @les105 – I don’t think it’d be rude if you didn’t tip. However, at the very least I’d tip the hair/makeup person. If the studio is anything like where I’m getting my boudoir portraits, the hair and makeup is add on (both are separate) so even though the photographer owns the place, I feel like the hair/makeup is above and beyond.

Thanks for the advice guys- the makeup artist doesn’t come with the package I won, so I’ll be paying her and I’m planning on purchasing a book for Fiance after through the photog, so I feel like he’ll be getting revenue even though the shoot is free? And I will absolutely name drop for him if everything goes well! I’m going in a few hours and I’m excited (and nervous!)
