My ex husband asked my father but I was 27 at the time so it wasn’t like permission was needed but I knew it would please my dad to be asked so I wasn’t firmly against it, although I personally think its unnecessary. Fiance had a long talk with my dad but I’m not 100% certain he ever asked that specific question. From what I managed to hear while eavesdropping (don’t judge me) he assured my father that he truly loved me, respected me, wanted me to be happy and would always take care of me. Dad is quite fond of Fiance so whatever he said was enough. Its completely up to each couple and what works for them.

missimagination :  Did he ask your parents for their permission before he moved in with you? Or when he continued to live with you unmarried for years? Or when he first had sex with you?

Outdated as hell to ask faux permission for marriage.

So my answer would be no, its silly.

I don’t see the point of asking unless you are in a situation where you would actually let the parents exercise a veto. Maybe ask for a blessing, but really would it matter if that was refused?
