So Fiance and I were just talking about doing our last registry at Target this weekend. Then I got an email saying that my account was probably one of the many that were compromised. I’m livid that my information isn’t secure and that I have to wait in line tomorrow at the bank to get a new card pronto. I’m irritated I won’t have my debit card for the weekend (what if there’s an emergency?). So yeah, I’m effing furious with Target.
I realize that security has been probably very heavily beefed up since this whole issue came about. Should we still register there? If not, what’s a good different place? Currently we have Belk and Williams Sonoma. As a guest, how would you feel about a Target registry?

@DuckEBee: As a guest I would appreciate a Target registry as it is easily accessible and not expensive. Honestly, the security breech could have happened to any retailer. When I worked at a Credit Union someone did something similiar to a locally owned grocery store in town. It happens. I have zero qualms about shopping there.

Honestly, I think Belk and WS is plenty. If you decide not to go with Target (whose registries I find intolerable thanks to their return policy and their poor track record of actually scanning the registry in when people purchase and their fast turn over of products), perhaps BB&B might be a good option.

I’ve never heard of belk and never seen a Williams Sonoma so as a guest I would prefer something universal. But if all your guests hace those nearby it’s fine

I wouldn’t register at Target just because you can’t return more than $70 worth of products a year, even if it’s off of your registry. So if you register for something that is priced over $70 and something is wrong with it, then you can’t return it and you are stuck with it.

@DGB38: Wow, I hadn’t heard that yet. Guess I won’t be registering there after all! Thanks for the tip.

I wouldn’t register there solely because of the issues my recently married friends had with the actual registry process. They all complained that if, for example, you wanted blue towels, you couldn’t just open up the towels as an item and select “blue” from a drop down – you had to hunt through ALL the towels to find the brand you wanted, then find the color…I just didn’t want to bother.
I do love Target though.
We registered at Kohl’s (fairly similar items) and Crate & Barrel (which actually has lots of your regular registry stuff – plates, glasses, towels – for good prices).

I wouldn’t care about the security issues (can happen to anyone)…I just think that 2 registries is plenty.

@cbgg: We were only adding Target to the mix because we could use some storage and organizational devices. We are having a larger wedding and only have a combined 70 items on both registries. Neither Belk nor Williams Sonoma have inexpensive shelving and storage containers.

Target’s shipping is bizarrely expensive… I bought a baby shower gift there for $20 and it was $30 after shipping and taxes! For a freaking infant first aid kit!

Dont register at target. Their return policy sucks. Do yourself a favor lol. Bed bath and beyond would be a better choice. Reasonably priced, excellent return policy, and easily accessible.

@DuckEBee: I think everyone got that email who had a target account. If that makes you feel better.

@DuckEBee: DON’T! I love Target. I used to shop there at least once a week and registered there. Everything on my registry was bought and I was thrilled. However, one thing I registered for was furnature. That was a horrible disaster that caused me to significantly cut back my Target shopping.
We registered a year out from our wedding and moved 9 months before my wedding. We switched our address on the registry and got gifts at our new address. Yay! Then I noticed that it had been 2 weeks and the kitchen table that was purchased and in stock hadn’t showed up. I called Target and got the run around. They refused to tell me who bought it and where it was delivered. I kept on demanding to speak to a manager and finally found out it was at my old address (with other gifts) and who it was from. I was annoyed, but luckily my old apartment hand’t thrown it out. Given the size of the table (it wouldn’t fit in my car), we had to rent a U-haul. Not thrilled, but it was an understandable-ish problem. Computer errors happen. Two months later we go to set up the table and there is a huge gash in it caused by poor shipping. Of course we notice this after setting up the chairs that go with it at midnight, but it is not Target’s fault. I spend a half and hour on the phone with Target customer service and they tell me 1) They have had problems with the shipping quality of that item before, 2) it is too heavy to send someone out to my apartment to return it, I will need to drive it to a store or a UPS store (mind you, it doesn’t fit in my car), 3) They don’t know if it will ever be in stock again, so they can’t send a replacement. This means we will also have to return the chairs (and disassemble them), rent another U-haul, and wait in line to return. When we returned it, the boxes were huge and heavy. Darling Husband left me with them outside the store while he returned the U-haul. I tried to find and employee with a push cart to help me get them in, but the only ones I could find were happily enjoying their smoke breaks and not interested in helping. I finally got them into the store about 20 minutes later (there was an awesome employee willing to help) and waited in line for 30 minutes to return it. We ended up with lots of store credit, but no kitchen table or appology.
We also got several duplicates– we get 2 extra sets of wine glasses, an extra coffee grinder, and 2 extra sets of silverware. Apparently they were not marked as purchased when my guests looked (but always came up marked as purchased on my end).
I could not recommend you avoiding them more.
We also registered with Macys and they were fantastic! I absolutely loved them.

@MsJ2theZ: yes their return policy is ridiculous! I only shop at Target now unless I know that’s the only place I can get that item. Bed Bath and Beyond is a MUCH BETTER place to register at. I LOVE their return policy since they don’t have a time limit on returns, you could return an item 10 years later if you want lol

@DuckEBee: Do you have a bank that can give you a temporary card? It won’t hve your name on it, but it will work just like a Visa. I’ve used one before when I had to get a new card.
While I understand the Target thing is a huge fiasco for a lot of people, I am not afraid to order online, or buy things in the store from Target. We always use our Target debit card (although we have a Target CC, too), and as far as I understand, PIN numbers (which are required with Target debit cards) were not compromised.
Now I will say that we were registered @ Target- and many of my shower gifts came from there, and the registry simply wouldn’t update. I got multiple items (3 woks!!)- and then even after I went into the registry and updated it– we continued to get the SAME items as wedding gifts. A little annoying, yes, but we just brought them back for gift cards.
We registered @ Target and Crate & Barrel– those were the places that I knew we’d easily be able to find items we like/easily use gift cards.
