I would make sure that out of town family is aware of the date but I don’t see any reason that you need to send Save-The-Date Cards.

You might want to check that weekend out to make sure there aren’t any major events the weekend of your wedding.  If there are then Save-The-Date Cards would be a good idea so out of town guests know where to book their hotels and it gives oyu a reason to call them and let them know that hotels may book up fast due to X event.

If there aren’t any events that weekend then you should be fine to send invites only.

    I am a fan of STD’s…..

I think STD’s are a nice gesture for out of town guests that need time to arrange appropriate hotel/car/babysitter etc

I do not think that you need to have a photo on the STD.  I personally am not a fan of these type of cards.  I kinda get freaked out seeing faces of friends/family members on my fridge for 4-8 months.

Did you create a wedding website?  If you have a website I would suggest having the web address printed on the STD.

@Buckeyegirl:  No need to set up room blocks right now plus as you said this is listed on the FORMAL invitations. All you need to have on the Save-The-Date Cards is the Couples’ names, wedding date and the city and state where the VENUE is. Do you have your venue booked yet?

You can always do a virtual STD in an e-mail. Give people deets but save the cash for something else.

Send save the dates! About a year ago, Fiance was best man in a wedding. They didn’t actually tell him the date until after we had booked a vacation. We had to pay to reschedule the whole thing. It could have been avoided if they had just sent out save the dates a few weeks before. It doesn’t mean that you need a block of rooms reserved or anything like that. Just say at the bottom, “formal invitation to follow”

I would just send them to the people out of town, that’s what we did.

@Buckeyegirl:  Nowadays the photographers are including the engagement session in their prices. Its a great way to get a feel of how well your photographer is going to do on the day of the wedding.
