@_Adelaide_:  my mom walked me down since my father passed away…if my father was alive…he would have walked me down without a doubt. I was a daddys girl.

@TexasAggieMom:  I wouldn’t feel too offended. My mum also raised me as a single mum my whole life and supported me financially. Still I don’t think I’m going to ask her to walk me down the aisle (i.e. will be walking down by myself), just because I don’t like the meaning of it. I don’t need to be “given” to my husband. I am not a thing he takes posession of. I CHOSE to marry him myself because I love him. If he would have asked for permission, it would have also been my mother’s permission, but I told him before that I don’t want him to ask as it is nobody’s but my choice (my mum absolutely loves him and that’s very important to me, I just don’t like the notion that just because I’m a woman I am not entitled to make my own life-changing decisions).

so perhaps your daughter feels similar? This shouldn’t disappoint you but rather make you proud that you raised a strong, independent woman. (Which is not to say that if you like the being walked down etc you couldn’t be a string independent woman!)

@TexasAggieMom:  At her wedding rehearsal, my daughter changed her mind on this and asked me to escort her down the aisle.  I was beyond thrilled, and managed to get through it without any tears, mis-steps, stepping on her dress, or any other mistakes.  I would have completely respected her decision if she opted to walk alone, as I was the one who taught her to be that independent, but in the end, it meant the world to me when she asked.  We were able to joke around a little while we waited behind the closed doors, and I was able to keep her from rushing down the aisle too fast.  I can’t wait to see photos, but even without them, this is a memory I will always treasure, and I was very honored to be asked.

Love this thread. My dad passed away when I was 8 (and she never re-married), so for me it was only natural to have my mom walk me down the aisle. Both of my grandfathers had also passed away, so luckily no one questioned my decision at all. Here’s my momma and me. 🙂

My dad died unexpectedly in March 2007. I considered having my brother in law or uncle walk me down the aisle, but in the end I knew there was no one else other than my precious mother that I wanted to do it. I was worried about her missing out on getting to see me as I walked down the aisle, but we talked about it, and she wanted to do what I wanted her to do. So, we went hand and hand down the aisle. When the time came, the preacher asked her who gives this bride, she said ‘Her Daddy in Heaven and I do’. I had no idea she was going to say that and I lost it! It was the sweetest thing ever and I’ll never forget it!
