I saw this happen with one of my brides at the shop I worked at. The seamstress tried to do a more traditional 4-point bustle where she just lifted the points however it made the front/sides of the dress poof as you described. The lace overlay was too delicate for it.

The remedy was to completely change it to a french bustle, where it is bustled underneath. It hid the points and remedied the poof and distortion to the front of the dress.

French Bustle example:

What is your skirt style and how long is the train? My ball gown/a-line had a lace overlay with a short to medium train. I had it bustled so the train just flipped under and it just looked like a plain ball gown. I think it was 10 point. Not sure what it’s called.

Personally I like french bustle anyway as they hide the points. I would discuss it with your seamstress at your next fitting.

It hasn’t been done to the dress yet but I can show you what it will look like. The alterations lady showed my how it would look by holding it. I think it might be a little higher than shown.I should also mention the top one is in my size after I ordered it and the bottom is the sample.

i had a really long train and had a one point bustle. i didnt feel like it changed the look of the front of my dress when draped and hooked correctly. at one point during my reception it came unhooked while dancing and got hooked quickly with the material all bunched funny. i kept stepping and felt like my foot was getting hung up. but other than that i felt like it looked ok. (wish i would have paid to have a like a double bustle or somethiing to add interest istead of a wedgie looking thing lol
