An automatic 20% of each of our gross salaries goes into retirement savings (RRSPs and pension). We take home about 13,000 each month after that

mortgage, condo fees, property taxes: 4,000

insurance: 130

utilities: 125

cell phones, internet, cable: 250

parking/ gas: 400

we have a few other small fixed expenses but everything else varies month to month depending on eating out, entertainment, travel etc. We live downtown in a major Canadian city and enjoy the urban lifestyle and spend our money on that and travel.

Take- home (after retirement- we have an auto. 20% taken for that, taxes, and health insurance): $6800

Mortgage, taxes: $1900

Car payment + insurance: $260

Student loans: $870

Utilities: $150

Those are the major payments. Honestly, I’d like to be able to take home more (like everyone), but I do think a lower mortgage payment would help. That said, student loans will be paid off in under 5 years and that will help hugely.
