The cut is the most important factor in a “flawless” diamond.  *He’s worried about the wrong thing.

He’s wasting his money on something you will never appreciate. Anything VS or better looks the same in terms of clarity to the naked eye…and even SI can be eye clean. Cut has the most impact on sparkle.

There are so many factors that go into what a diamond costs. Shape, cut, color, clarity, carat, where you are…

i suggest you go to rarecarat. You can specify every aspect of the diamond you want and it’ll check multiple online sellers to show you how much it’ll cost. Good luck.

A 10k IF D XXX, will be…. small. I do think its a crazy thing to focus on because to the eye it is by definition *no different* than a VS1 or VS2. You could even go nuts with a VVS1 or VVS2, but yes IF is overkill and drives the price up like crazy. I would try to refocus his OCD to cut… theres a lot to research (not as simple as just chosing an “excellent cut”), but light performance is something youll actually enjoy. You can still get excellent clarity and color, but “perfect” is soooo expensisve. And people arent perfect. Relationships are perfect. So while the sentiment is sweet, its misguided!

Well, your’e essentially wasting money to get IF because it’s something you’ll never appreciate with the naked eye. You do want a good quality diamond, but it’s not necessary to get IF. As PP’s have said, cut is extremely important, and color. If you’re on a budget, you will be sacrificing a lot of carat weight to get IF, which you won’t be able to see. If he’s letting you know this much about your diamond in advance, what’s his reasoning for not including you? I kind of think you should be involved since it’s obviously not a surprise, and he’s going to be sacrificing the size of YOUR diamond to satisfy his OCD. He should also get you the shape you prefer if he knows that, regardless of how he feels about it. I can understand the whole, “this is my token of love for you” when the whole thing is a surprise and he may not know your preference. But if he knows you want something, I think that should weigh more heavily than what he wants if he hasn’t even gotten it yet. Perhaps try to encourage him more from that point to let you be more involved? You could try looking at online places like Blue Nile, that’s where my husband got my ring. You get more bang for your buck than in a traditional jewelry store. Good luck!!

10K for an IF diamond with all other C’s on the high end will not get you a huge diamond.  Mine is just over a carat, VS2 clarity, G color, but Triple X in other areas which was most important to my husband and my diamond was 10K.  I love it because the sparkle and shine is amazing.  To me, it’s a perfect diamond and I don’t need it to be IF to tell me that.

If he’s a purist, then he’s a purist!  Has he taken a look at Blue Nile?  There are about 80 round brilliants and 1 princess IF or F, ideal cut, colorless, excellent polish and symmetry, no fluorescence in that budget. You would be looking at around a carat.

To be fair, if he was really a purist he’d want FL not IF 🙂 I kid (kind of), but sometimes “mind clean” is  a big deal to someone and theres nothing wrong with seeking The Highest Quality if thats what makes you all happy.

An IF mall store stone? I didn’t think those existed. Mall jewelry stores sell the stones nobody who knows anything about diamonds wants.

penny1403 :  He’s looking for an IF diamond at a mall chain? And not only that, said they were cheaper than independent jewelers? You have to be joking.
