I can’t tell if you say “touch OCD” as a flippant layman term or if you are referring to a medical diagnosis? If he is just particular, I would recommend you start by having a frank conversation with him about value, specifically what YOU value. Are HIS wants more important than YOUR wants in a ring? If he has a medical condition, I would just try to guide him to online stores, and hope that he is following the advice of a professional and can keep things in perspective. Having a talk about what you really want in the ring isn’t going to scare him away if he really plans to propose.

ETA: disregard this advice if you really do want a IF stone. I just don’t get that vibe from your post

I have a GIA IF, color D excellent cut diamond.  It’s .95.  We paid less than $10,000 online but we searched for two years (no joke).  It can be done, but not in a mall jewelry store.  Please tell him to stop wasting his time at the mall.

Can I just say also that I am one of those people that a three-letter-name mall jewelry store effed over really badly? Sent my ring in to be sized and got it back with a CZ instead of my diamond. I don’t trust them at all. I am not the only person this has happened to, either. It’s VERY common. PLEASE tell him to look elsewhere, somewhere you can trust. They’re slimy thieves.

I had a choice between a GIA IF, D, XX (ovals don’t get cut ratings) and a GIA VVS2 D XX which was slightly larger and honestly, the second stone was nicer IMO. I can see one inclusion under the magnifying glass, not even with a loupe. You really should have a say in this, bee.

beka86 :  They did not. It was my engagement ring from my first marriage, happened about seven years ago right before the divorce. Honestly, I should have taken it as a sign. But there was a lawsuit and we signed our names to it but didn’t have the money to do anything serious about it. I was heartbroken for years, but now I take it as a lesson learned. I try to steer everyone I know away from those stores. They’re horrible quality rings and stones, and you can get so much more online from a reputable company. My three rings were purchased through Brilliant Earth, were cheaper than my engagement ring, and much higher quality. I have a local jeweler I trust who does all his work in store, and I am completely paranoid about leaving my ring ANYWHERE. Honestly I hope they go out of business – they deserve SO much bad karma.

Send him to Pricescope.  And have a serious discussion with him about which of the 4 C’s you prioritize.

Also, when it comes to flawless diamonds the type of cut is important. For example, emerald and ascher cuts show flaws way more than say rounds or cuishions.

I don’t see why bees are bashing IF diamonds. I have a VVS1 and I’m so proud of it, and if he wants to buy an IF then let him buy an IF! Nothing wrong with that. I would love to have an IF diamond, but our budget would’ve meant that an IF would be extremely small and I wanted something at least 0.6ct.

That being said, I also agree that he’s not going to find one in a mall jewelry store! You should suggest that he finds the diamond on Blue Nile and then get it set at a local jewelry store. He’ll be able to find the perfect diamond, but still gets to work with a jewelr and you’ll have someplace to take your ring to get it cleaned and tightened. Good luck! Please post a pic once it’s on your finger!

sassybeee :  I don’t think people are bashing IF diamonds. The weird part is that he claims to be able to see flaws when flaws are hardly visible under magnification.

I think what’s happening is that the mall stores are bringing out stones that they say are eye clean, and her boyfriend is seeing the inclusions.  So maybe that’s why he’s now looking for IF or better.

penny1403 :  I haven’t read all the posts, but I agree with the bees telling you it is a bit of a “waste” to go for IF/FL, HOWEVER, more importantly, I feel its imperative you find a free standing, family owned and or wholesale jeweler if possible vs Mall/Chain store jewelers. I STRONGLY urge you to advise him to look elsewhere ESPECIALLY for a “perfect” diamond because you will pay quadruple for it there vs at an independent jeweler. Also, like all the other bees have stated please please please focus on cut equally if not more than clarity. I think its very precious and thoughtful that your Fiance is on the hunt for perfection for you! But I will say it sounds like its more for him than for you lol, ahhh men LOL. Ok so do you have a size preference or are you ok with a smaller size? Or is size not important at all? Have you checked out James Allen??????? I am telling you their prices are really nice and seem to have decent stones I am sure there are bees on here who have created boards that have purchased from James Allen and I think you and your Fiance might be very pleasantly surprised at the prices. Please check them out. Best of luck. Keep us posted as to what he picks out for you.
