beka86 :  Fair enough! I didn’t think OP cared about size, but now that I see she wants more than a carat then yeah, IF and under $10k definitely isn’t reasonable! There are some girls who want IF but don’t mind a 0.4ct diamond, not everyone needs a huge rock! But OP said she wants one so I guess that’s a moot point!

penny1403 :  Aaaah, so it’s actually the setting that’s limiting him.  Well, you can always suggest to him that he select the diamond he loves online and then go the custom route on the setting with a reputable jeweler. He should be able to accomplish this on his budget.

penny1403 :  If a diamond is graded GIA Flawless or Internally Flawless, your BF should not be able to find any flaws. If he’s finding that the diamonds he’s shown at mall jewelry places still have flaws, it’s probably because they’re not always graded by a GIA or AGS lab which are the reputable grading labs in the US. IGI and others are known for lax grading standards and mall stores use them to get customers to overpay for poorer quality stone. Please make sure your BF does not purchase a diamond that’s graded by anything other than GIA or AGS, if quality is important to him. Better value can be found at independent jewelry stores or at blue nile, whiteflash, and james allen. Additionally, Van Cleef and Arpels is known for using DEF and IF-VVS2 Diamonds in their jewelry. This store is on the pricier end so you won’t get a lot of bang for your buck but if flawless and colorless is the priorty then you can definitely check it out.

I don’t know, from this thread and some of the OPs other posts, I have a feelinfg that the BF will manage to use a set budget combined with unrealistic specs for that budget to string things along for a few years. –>  “Still looking for that perfect IF diamond but everthing I’m finding is either too expensive or has flaws that only I can see!”

If it were me, I would hop onto Blue Nile or James Allen and play with specs. Many more choices and offerings than a mall jewelry store. Both will also allow you to return the stones if you aren’t satisfied. It will be challenging to get a 1.5-2 carat IF/D stone in any shape for $10k, so if that’s the size you want, you may be able to find some other areas to compromise on.

This is a 1.6 c K – faint brown, IF, Triple X diamond.  It cost approximately 10K (CAD).  I did not end up keeping it though due to finding a stone I liked more.

penny1403 :  I think the TWO of you together picked out a beautiful ring. I hope you love it. I think its wonderful he was willing to compromise and that you two joined forces and made a very hard decision together and with consideration for each other. I think your old stone would be wonderful in a right hand ring. Life is tough and the more we overcome and move past the stronger we have become. I cant wait to see your beauty on your finger make sure to take lots of pics and share it with us. Congrats <3

I have an IF diamond and a VG cut and the cut made it sparkle like crazy not the IF clarity 😉
