We just ordered ours today…no fondant.  Three layers, buttercream with a few buttercream swirls and flowers.  It’s obvious that bakeries will let you spend as much money as you want on the decorations, LOL- but we didn’t really want anything fancy.  We went with these flavors:

bottom (main) layer: golden cake with apple cinnamon chai filling

middle layer:  red velvet with cream cheese filling

top layer:  carrot cake- SO DELISH!!!!

Can’t wait to see (and taste!) the finished product!

As an aside- a lot of the extra sugar flowers, fondant draping, etc just seem like a total waste of money to me.

I’m not a big fan of fondant. The little pearls on the cake were fondant, but the rest was all buttercream. It was SO good!

I don’t like the taste of fondant, but I love the look… So we went with a buttercream frosting (smoothed out, like others have shown) and fondant decorations on it.  The decorations could easily be peeled off/avoided if people didn’t like the taste, but it still got the look I wanted 🙂

@Hippos:  that’s beautiful! Can’t believe it’s buttercream.

I’m not a fan of how fondant tastes so we went with buttercream as well. Sorry this is the only photo I have uploaded. It has a chantilly lace design (I call them squiggles lol) on top of each tier and at the base, with a scroll design on the sides. Very classic and paired well with my lace dress.

@banana311:  I got buttercream and skirted the decoration issue altogether:

(crappy guest pic but you get the idea)

@MrsBananas:  OMG I love your cake — beautiful!!  I am pinning it for inspiration! 🙂

@mintblush:  I love that gold cake stand!  Did your baker provide it?  I want a gold one for my cake, as I’m using gold accents elsewhere, but silver is most common it seems

@kmb727:  yes, silver is too common. We used a rental company for our linens and rented from them, sorry. Our bakery only had silver stands too so I feel your pain! I was almost tempted to buy one off ebay!

Ours was buttercream with real flowers, the baker didn’t actually put the flowers on as I had requested but it was fine in the end.
